MINOR PROJECT DOCUMENTATION

IoT Based Smart Car Parking System

PROJECT OVERVIEW

In the current scenario, a majority of people in cities are facing problems of parking vehicles.
There are too many vehicles on the road and not enough parking space. Often car owners
don’t have the knowledge whether a parking lot is free or not. This problem has led us to the
need for efficient parking management systems. The problem with manual parking system is
manual entry and exit system which leads to waiting lines on the gates. Another issue manual
recording of entry and exit of cars which becomes difficult to maintain. Along with this,
improper space utilisation is a trouble. Even Security of parked cars is a matter of concern.

Well, our project brings a solution to the above-mentioned problem, where we demonstrate
the use of “IoT based Smart Car Parking System” to simplify usage and increase efficiency of
the Parking Space. To demonstrate this concept, we used NodeMCU along with an ESP8266
SoC (System on Chip). We used IR sensors to detect the presence of an incoming car at Entry
and Exit Gate. The gate is Automatically controlled by two Servo Motors which strictly
allows the cars to move inside the parking lot through the Entry gate and move outside only
through Exit. Also, an LCD is used to monitor the number of Cars present inside Parking
Space and Empty Slots remaining. We also used ThingSpeak Cloud server for displaying the
availability of Slots or Cars present inside the Space. This allows user to check the
availability of Slots inside the parking space online from anywhere and thus avail hassle free
parking. This also ensures security of Cars as total number of cars inside the space will
always be updated to owner instantly in cloud. So, this system solves the parking issue for
cities and get users can benefit from an efficient IoT based Parking Management System.

REAL LIFE APPLICATIONS

1. Real-time availability of data and applications that allow users to monitor available

and unavailable parking spots

2. More automation leads to less manual activity save on labor cost and resource

exhaustion.

3. Users can find the best spot available, thus saving time, resources and effort. The

parking lot fills up efficiently and space can be utilized properly by commercial and

corporate entities and public.

4. According to reports, searching for parking space burns around one million barrels of

oil a day. Such a parking model will significantly decrease driving time; thus, it will

lower the amount of daily vehicle emissions and ultimately help in reducing the

global environmental footprint.
