Simple past tense

Simple Past Tense is a type of sentence used to describe events that happened in the
past and were completed or ended in that same past time. So, we use this tense when we talk
about activities that have already been completed in the past. For example, if we want to say
that we bought a book yesterday afternoon. Since this activity happened in the past (yesterday
afternoon) and the process of buying is already finished, we can use this verb tense to
describe it.
Rumus umum dari verb ini adalah subject + verb 2 + object + complement. Namun
seperti rumus tenses yang lain rumus past tense pun berubah tergantung predikatnya apakah
nominal atau verbal.
Rumus Simple Past Tense
A. Kalimat Positif (Affirmative Sentence)
Rumus: Subject + Verb 2 (past form) + Object
Contoh:
I visited my friend last week.
(Saya mengunjungi teman saya minggu lalu.)
She bought a new dress yesterday.
(Dia membeli gaun baru kemarin.)
They played football yesterday afternoon.
(Mereka bermain sepak bola sore kemarin.)
B. Kalimat Negatif (Negative Sentence)
Rumus: Subject + did not (didn't) + Verb 1 (base form) + Object
Contoh:
I did not visit my friend last week.
(Saya tidak mengunjungi teman saya minggu lalu.)
She didn't buy a new dress yesterday.
(Dia tidak membeli gaun baru kemarin.)
They didn't play football yesterday afternoon.
(Mereka tidak bermain sepak bola sore kemarin.)
C. Kalimat Tanya (Interrogative Sentence)
Rumus: Did + Subject + Verb 1 (base form) + Object?
Contoh:
Did you visit your friend last week?
(Apakah kamu mengunjungi temanmu minggu lalu?)
Did she buy a new dress yesterday?
(Apakah dia membeli gaun baru kemarin?)
Did they play football yesterday afternoon?
(Apakah mereka bermain sepak bola sore kemarin?)
Kegunaan Simple Past Tense:
a) Menyatakan kejadian yang terjadi di masa lampau dan telah selesai.
Contoh:
I visited my grandmother yesterday.
(Saya mengunjungi nenek saya kemarin.)
b) Menceritakan urutan peristiwa masa lalu (storytelling).
Contoh:
He entered the room, turned on the light, and sat down.
(Dia masuk ke ruangan, menyalakan lampu, dan duduk.)
c) Menyatakan kebiasaan di masa lalu (yang sekarang sudah tidak dilakukan).
Contoh:
When I was a child, I played in the garden every afternoon.
(Saat saya kecil, saya bermain di kebun setiap sore.)
d) Digunakan dalam kalimat pengandaian yang tidak nyata (conditional type
2).
Contoh:
If I won the lottery, I would travel the world.
(Jika saya menang lotre, saya akan keliling dunia.)
KESIMPULAN
Simple Past Tense digunakan untuk menyatakan aksi yang terjadi dan selesai di masa lalu.
Ciri utamanya adalah penggunaan bentuk kedua dari kata kerja (verb 2), misalnya "played"
atau "went".
Contoh kalimat:
I played soccer yesterday.
She went to the store last week.
Pola kalimat:
Positif: Subjek + Verb 2
Negatif: Subjek + did not + Verb 1
Interogatif: Did + Subjek + Verb 1?
Biasanya digunakan dengan keterangan waktu seperti yesterday, last week, atau two days
ago.
