a) EDS3701 IS OFFERED STRICTLY ONLINE. EXPLAIN WHAT ONLINE
LEARNING IS ACCORDING. TO YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING? INCLUDE
BOTH THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF THIS LEARNING
METHOD. USE YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES OF LEARNING AT UNISA.

Online learning: is where a student do their studies at home using the online platforms of
communication with their lecture. Example when there is a meeting they zoom to
communicate and when they submit their work they use website of the institution to
submit their work.

ADVANTAGES OF ONLINE LEARNING

 It allow student to attend classes from any location of their choice and it also allows
schools to reach out to a more extensive network of student, instead of being restricted
by geographical boundaries.
 Student who lives in a rural areas are facing challenges with online learning because of
network problems they ended up repeating module because the network did not allow
them to submit
 Online learning is far more affordable as compared to a physical learning. Example , the
student who study full time need more money for study fees, accommodation and food ,
while the student who study online staying at home is not spend more money but only
pay the study fees only and the data. Disadvantages of online learning
 Online learning offers teachers an efficient way to deliver lesson to student. Online has a
number of tools such as videos, pdf, podcasts and teachers can use all these tools as part
of their lesson plan.
 There is also a greater chance for student to be easily distracted by social media or other
sites.
 Some student have biggest challenge of online learning with focusing on the screen for a
long time

DISADVANTAGES OF ONLINE LEARNING

 South Africa is under loud-shedding when the is no electricity you will be delayed to
write or complete your assessment, you won’t be able to submit your assignment or
write your examination

b) EXPLAIN HOW COLLABORATIVE LEARNING IS USED IN THE EDS3701

MODULE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA (UNISA)?

Collaborative learning is used to encourage students to view the environment from a

different perspective and provides them with an opportunity to practice social and
leadership skills. In EdS3701 the student have a forum where all student communicate
with each other and do the activities posted in the forum and also discuss where it
possible.
Collaborative learning helps a lot both lecture and a student because they learn more a lot,
and it involves student working as a group to solve problem or understand an idea. When
student working together in collaborative groups they can ask each other questions, share
ideas and give feedback to direct their own learning.

c) WHY DO YOU THINK EDS 3701 STUDENTS ARE RELUCTANT TO

PARTICIPANT IN THE DISCUSSION FORUMS AND E-TUTOR CLASSES?

I think many students are working full time job Monday to Friday so they do not have
time to be part of the discussion forum. I think some student do not like to post on the
forum and ask question because they do not want to talk in a discussion forum because
there is a lot of people and they fear that maybe they post or comment with an answer that
he or she not sure about it. Most of student not take discussion forum serious or important
in their learning that why they do not involve themselves, and its not like they do not have
time but they do not see it as tool of their learning, which led them to do not understand
what is the update of their module, some student missed their assignment due date
because they are not update. In EdS 3701 our lecturer always remind us through mylife
email to participate in the discussion forum and there is an informal activity to practise
for the formal assessment, but most of the student ignore the discussion forum and they
will be ended up doing wrong assessment because they do not follow the instruction.

Common questions

Powered by AI

Students are reluctant to participate in discussion forums because they are busy with full-time jobs, which limits their time availability. Additionally, some students may lack confidence to post due to fear of making incorrect comments in front of peers, while others do not perceive these forums as important tools for learning .

The University of South Africa emphasizes integrity and ethical conduct regarding academic texts, categorizing plagiarism as a serious violation. The consequences for plagiarism include forfeiting credit for the concerned work and possible expulsion from the university .

To address reluctance in forum engagement, lecturers regularly remind students via emails to participate. They also offer informal activities to practice for formal assessments, though uptake remains low due to students' misperceptions of the forum's value .

Informal activities are designed to enhance learning by offering practice aligned with formal assessment objectives. However, their effectiveness is compromised by low student participation, driven by misconceptions of these activities' value. Thus, despite their potential benefits, the impact is diminished unless students actively engage .

The perception of unimportance given by students to discussion forums leads to decreased participation, which, in turn, affects their performance negatively. Students miss updates and deadlines for assignments by not engaging in discussions that could clarify instructions and provide practice for assessments. This lack of involvement ultimately results in errors in their assignments .

The main advantages of online learning, as shared by the student, include the ability to attend classes from any location, which broadens the geographical reach of institutions. Additionally, it is more affordable compared to physical learning since students studying online do not incur costs associated with accommodation and food, only study fees and data .

Technological barriers include poor internet connectivity, which hinders timely assignment submissions. Socio-economic factors involve the affordability of technology and internet access, affected by costs that are significant in rural contexts. This situation is exacerbated by infrastructural issues like load-shedding that disrupt learning .

The EDS3701 module at UNISA incorporates collaborative learning by providing a forum where students can communicate, conduct activities, and discuss topics together. This setup encourages the development of social and leadership skills, as students work in groups to ask questions, share ideas, and give feedback, directing their own learning .

UNISA suggests that students learn proper reference techniques and guidelines to avoid plagiarism. Consulting lecturers when uncertain about requirements is encouraged. These measures are crucial for maintaining academic integrity and ensuring that work is original and appropriately credited .

Students face challenges such as network issues, especially in rural areas, which can prevent them from submitting work timely. There are also distractions from social media, difficulties in maintaining focus during long screen times, and the impact of load-shedding in South Africa which can delay completing assessments .
