Activity 1
Activity 1 -Introduction to Psychological Assessment
Objective:
• To familiarize students with the fundamental concepts, methods, and ethical considerations of
psychological assessment.
Instructions:
1. Read the following overview: Psychological assessment is a structured process used to gather data about
a person’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. It involves various tools like tests, interviews,
observations, and standardized instruments, which are used by professionals to diagnose mental health
issues, make decisions regarding treatment plans, and understand an individual’s strengths and areas for
growth. This process is guided by ethical standards and requires reliability and validity of the tools used.
2. Answer the following questions, providing at least 200 words per answer:
• Q1: What is psychological assessment, and how does it differ from a psychological test? Give
examples to clarify your explanation.
• Q2: Discuss the role of standardization in psychological assessment. Why is it important to use
standardized tests, and how does it impact the results?
• Q3: Explain why a psychologist might choose to use multiple methods of assessment (e.g., self-
reports, behavioral observations, clinical interviews) rather than relying on a single method.
• Q4: Describe a specific scenario in which psychological assessment might be essential (e.g.,
educational settings, clinical diagnosis, organizational hiring) and explain the purpose and
benefits of conducting an assessment in that context.
• Q5: Identify and discuss two ethical considerations in psychological assessment. Why is it
important for a psychologist to adhere to these ethical guidelines?
• Q6: Reflect on the concept of reliability and validity in assessment tools. Why are these concepts
crucial in ensuring the effectiveness of psychological assessments? Provide examples.
