Understanding Nebulae and Star Formation

A nebula is a large cloud of gas and dust in space, with some being stellar nurseries where new stars form due to gravitational attraction. The star formation process involves the accumulation of gas and dust, leading to nuclear fusion and the birth of a new star. The Hubble Space Telescope, located in space, provides clearer images of celestial objects compared to Earth-based telescopes, which are affected by atmospheric conditions.

Nebula
A nebula is a large cloud made
of gas and dust floating in
space. Some nebulae come from
stars that have exploded and
spread their material, like in a
supernova. Others are places
where new stars begin to form.
Stellar
nurseries?
Some Nebulae are said to be stellar
nurseries because they are places
where gas and dust come together
due to gravity, finally forming new
stars.
star formation
within a stellar
nursery
A star forms in a stellar nursery, this is a
large cloud of gas and dust. Gravity pulls
the gas and dust together to form a “ball”.
As the “ball” grows, it also gets hotter.
When it becomes hot enough in the center,
it starts a process called nuclear fusion,
where hydrogen turns into helium. This
releases energy, and a new star is born.
Hubble Space Telescope
different from other
telescopes used to look
into space
The Hubble Space Telescope is different from
other telescopes because it is in space, not
on Earth. Telescopes on Earth cannot always
see clearly because the air in the atmosphere
makes the stars look blurry, and clouds or
lights from cities can block the view. But
Hubble is above the atmosphere, so it takes
very clear pictures of stars, planets, and
galaxies. It can also see things that are very
far away in space.
