SAMPLE PROBLEM 1
1. A 15cm straight wire carries a 30A current. What is the magnitude of the magnetic
force on the wire if it is placed between the pole ends of a magnet at an angle of 45
degrees? Assume the magnetic field strength between the poles is 0.75T.

F = ILBsinθ
I – 30 A
L – 0.15 cm
B – 0.75 T
Sin θ – 45°

F = (30)(0.15)(0.75)sin(45)
ANSWER: F = 2.39 N
SAMPLE PROBLEM 2
2. A straight wire carrying a 400A current is stretched in an east-west direction
between two towers 100m apart. The earth’s magnetic field exerts a downward
force on the wire. Find this magnetic force if the Earth’s magnetic field strength at
the given location is 7 x 10
-5 T.
F = ILB
I – 400 A
L – 100 m
B – 7 x 10^-5

F = (300)(100m)(7x10^-5)
ANSWER F = 2.8 N
SAMPLE PROBLEM 3
3. A wire of length 0.75m carries a current of 20.0A. The wire experiences a force
of 5.8N in the presence of a magnetic field 0.50T. What is the angle between the
magnetic field and the wire?
𝑭
F = sin^-1 ( )
𝑰𝑳𝑩
F – 5.8 N
I – 20.0 A
B – 0.50 T

𝟓.𝟖

compass due to the power line?
𝝁𝟎𝑰
B=

𝝁𝟎 – 4π x 10^-7
I – 100 A
r – 6.1 m

4π x 10^-7(100)

𝝁𝟎 – 4π x 10^-7
I – 8.2 A
R – 0.052 m

4π x 10^−7(8.2)
B=
