SEMESTER EXAMINATION -2022

CLASS- M. Sc. PAPER CODE: MPH-C201


PAPER TITLE: E. M. Theory & Electrodynamics

Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 70

Note: Question Paper is divided into two sections: A and B. Attempt both the sections as
per given instructions.

SECTION-A (SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS)

Instructions: Answer any FIVE questions in about 150 words each. Each question carries six
marks. (5 X 6 = 30 Marks)

Question-1: State and prove first uniqueness theorem.


Question-2: (a) Using the formula for the potential for a dipole:

Find the corresponding electric field (𝐸𝑑𝑖𝑝 (𝑟, θ)).
(b) Deduce the expression found in (a) for (𝐸𝑑𝑖𝑝 (𝑟, θ)) in the coordinate-free form.
Question-3: (a) Show that 𝛻 × 𝑩 = μ0 𝑱, using Ampere’s circuital law.
(b) Distinguish between Di, Para and Ferromagnetic substances in terms of magnetic
susceptibility (𝜒𝑚 ).
Question-4: Discuss the effect of magnetic field on atomic orbits.
Question-5: (a) Write down the expression of Maxwell’s equations in matter.
(b) Starting from Maxwell’s equations:

Question-6: Using Maxwell’s equations, find electric and magnetic fields in terms scalar and vector
potentials.
Question-7: (a) What do you mean by Polarization?
(b) Using Maxwell’s equations in vacuum, find the wave equation for electric field 𝑬
and magnetic field𝑩.
Question-8: Find the reflection coefficient for the plane electromagnetic wave incidence normal on the
interface of two linear media.
Question-9: Discuss briefly about retarded potentials.
Question-10: What are wave guides? Find the cutoff frequency (ω𝑚𝑛 ) for rectangular wave guide.
SECTION-B (LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS)

Instructions: Answer any FOUR questions in detail. Each question carries 10 marks.
(4 X 10 = 40 Marks)

Question-11: Obtain the approximate potential expression at large distance up to third order (i.e.,
quadrupole moment) using multipole expansion for the potential of an arbitrary
localized charge distribution.
Question-12: Solve the Laplace’s equation in spherical polar coordinate system.
Question-13: (a) Find the vector potential in the form of bound currents.
(b) Discuss the physical interpretation of bound currents.
Question-6: State and discuss the Poynting’s theorem in detail.
Question-15: Obtain the expression for energy stored in the magnetic field.
Question-16: (a) What do you mean by gauge transformations?
(b) Discuss about the Lorentz gauge in detail.
Question-17: Obtain the expression for electric and magnetic fields in a monochromatic plane wave
with propagation vector 𝒌 and polarization 𝒏̂.
Question-18: What is radiation? Find the expression for electric field 𝑬 for electric dipole radiation.
