Technology overview
EMC Isilon storage OneFS® is EMC Isilon's seventh-generation operating system that provides
system the intelligence behind all Isilon® scale-out storage systems. It combines
the three layers of traditional storage architectures—file system, volume
manager and RAID—into one unified software layer, creating a single
intelligent file system that spans all nodes within a cluster.
OneFS enables:
Independent or linear scalability of performance and capacity to
over 85 Gigabytes per second of throughput and more than 15.5
petabytes of capacity in a single filesystem
A single point of management for large and rapidly growing
repositories of data
Mission-critical reliability and high availability with state-of-the-art
data protection
Unlike simple NAS namespace aggregation products, Isilon's OneFS
operating system is truly distributed and intelligently stripes data across all
nodes in a cluster to create a single, shared pool of storage. OneFS offers
unsurpassed mission critical reliability and industry- leading drive rebuild
times.
OneFS also delivers unique cluster-aware symmetric multiprocessing (SMP)
capabilities that enable the system to move tasks between processors for
extremely efficient workload balancing. In conjunction with OneFS„ ability
to stripe data across all nodes in a cluster, Isilon achieves the high
aggregate bandwidth and transactional performance required to power
next generation enterprise data centers.

Lab 1 – Configuration of an EMC Isilon storage cluster
Overview In this lab you will connect to the serial ports of physical nodes that are
currently unconfigured. This is the state it would be in if it was ordered and
shipped onsite. You will configure the 1st node in the cluster by stepping
through configuration wizard. Then you will add 2 more nodes to finish the
configuration of the EMC Isilon storage system to the minimum of 3 nodes
for the cluster..
Lab Connect to the Windows 7 Client
Click on the computer icon to the right of the Isilon LaunchPad VM
(Windows 7 Client)
Click on the resolution you want to use
It is recommend to use 1024x768 or higher resolution
Click the icon above the VLAB\user1 label

Start configuring the 1st node
Click on any of the PuTTY windows. If you do not see any text, press the
Enter key. You will be given a 4 choices.
Select “Create a new cluster” by typing 1, and pressing the Enter key.
(Note: if you incorrectly enter anything you can always type back and
Enter to step back a step in the wizard)
Set the password to "a" for both root and admin
At the prompt “Please enter new password for root:”, type “a” (without
quotes), and press Enter
Enter “a” again when prompted (Password changed.)
At the prompt “Please enter new password for admin”, type “a” (without
quotes), and press Enter
Enter “a” again when prompted (Password changed.)
Do not enable SupportIQ
Would you like to enable SupportIQ? [yes] type no and press Enter
Isilon OneFS 7.0 Initial Configuration vLab Demo Guide 10
For a Demo it's best to not step through answering all the SupportIQ
questions.
Configure a Cluster Name
Type in any name that makes sense and press Enter. The customer's name
or division is usually good.
Choose the Encoding
For most demos, simply press Enter to choose the default of UTF-8. Others
can be used, if needed.
Configure Inter-Node Communications Networking
Select “Configure Netmask” by typing 1 and pressing Enter
Type [Link] and press Enter

Isilon OneFS 7.0 Initial Configuration vLab Demo Guide 16
Commit the Configuration
When prompted to “Commit Changes?”, press Enter
At this point the terminal will disconnect because of the way it is virtualized.
It usually takes about two minutes for the cluster to commit this
configuration, however, with virtualization, this can be faster. Now is a
good time to answer any questions from the customer.
Add a 2nd node via the serial port
Select one of the other putty windows

Add the 3rd node to the cluster via the web administration interfaces
Choose any of the web browsers installed. They all default to loading the
Administration Web Interface. Agreed to any SSL certificate warnings that
appear because the cluster is using a self-signed certificate.
Login to the web interface as "admin" with the password of "a".
Some of the browsers will automatically fill this in for you.
Isilon OneFS 7.0 Initial Configuration vLab Demo Guide 18
The two nodes in the cluster should be displayed on the Cluster Overview
page.
You can ignore any alerts, as they are caused by OneFS being run as a
virtual machine.
The Virtual Hot Spare (VHS) will also be displayed as being large part of the
pie chart on the right because of this virtualization.
