What is Light?
Light-Luminous and non-luminous objects
What is Light? It describe about luminous and non-luminous objects.
Similarities???
Differences???
Where does the moon disappear during the day??
• Identify the sources of light
• natural and artificial sources
• Identify the luminous and non- luminous objects.
Uses of light?
Uses of Light
• Light helps us to see things around us.
• Light helps plants to prepare food and grow.
• Light is used for decorative purpose.
• It is used for entertainment ( TV, laptops and other devices)
• it is used in Sign boards and signals.
• Microscope and telescopes use properties of light.
Light source is closer Brighter
Light source is Far Away Dimmer
As light travels away from the source
It appears Dim because it spreads out
In all directions.
How does light travel???
Watch this video and note your observation in the notebook

Light travels in a straight line. This is called Rectilinear propagation
of light.
• When light has to be shown in a diagram, we use Rays to
represent light.
• A group of rays which travel together in the same direction is
called a Beam of light.
Diagrams which use rays to represent light are
called RAY DIAGRAMS
A reflection…………
What is a reflection??
How is a reflection formed??
Flash light onto a mirror….
Reflection of light
• When light rays bounce off a surface, it is called reflection of light.
• We can see things around us when light reflects from surfaces and
enter our eyes.
• Some objects reflect a lot of light and appear bright or shiny.
• Some objects reflect less light and appear dull.
How do we see things??
How Do our eyes see Luminous Objects?
How Do our eyes see Non - Luminous Objects?

Page 193 Questions: 1-4
To be solved in the notebook ONLY.
∙ when light rays are reflected off a smooth surface they travel back perfectly in
the same direction and produce a clear image like the still water and also cause
the surface to appear shiny, like the Glossy paper and metal surface.
∙ When light reflects from a rough surface, the reflected light is scattered in all
directions producing an unclear image like the rippled water. Such rough
surfaces appear dull like wood and crumpled paper.
Rarer (Air)
Denser (Glass/
Water))

Refraction in everyday life
A. Fill in the blanks:
1. When light travels from a rarer to denser medium, it bends ………….. the
normal. [1]
2. When light travels from a denser to rarer medium, it bends ………….. the
normal. [1]
3. Angle of incidence is ………………………..than the angle of refraction. [1]
B. Draw a labelled ray diagram to show how light travels as it passes though a glass
slab :
Your diagram should include the following: [7]
• Normal
• Incident ray
• Refracted ray
• Emergent ray
• Angle of incidence
• Angle of refraction
• Angle of emergence.
