• SANTHAL UPRISING (1855-1856)

• Santhal Hool was most Massive of all tribal revolts

• Santhal inhabited the region between Bh agalpur and


Rajmahal known as DAMAN - i - KOH .

• Their main resentment was against Usurious people


from Bengal. But they turned against the govt when
they saw that govt officials were hand in gloves with
ppressors

• They called all these people DIKUS

• Under the leadership of Sidu and Kanhu they rose in


revolt .

• The leaders claimed that - Thakur had communicated


with them and asked them to take up arms against
Dikus, to usher in Satyug.

• The rebellion was suppressed with immense brutal ity.

• PA IKA REBELLION (1817)

• Paikas were traditional landed militia of kingdom of khurda (odisha)

• When britishers started tinkering with the revenue system in 1803,


farming community of od isha rose in rebellion

• British revoked the rent free estates of paikas

• Led by Bakshi Jagabandhu, paikas forced company forces to retreat

• Later it was suppressed

• MUNDA REVOLT (1899-1900)

• Birsa Munda leader

• Ulgulan of Birsa

• Reason - Struggle against the destru ction of their system


of common land holding by j ag ird ars , thikadars ,
moneylenders.

• Munda's envisag ed an ideal and just society which would


e free from internal as well as european exploiters.

• Many a times backward looking, keen to restore past practices

• Semi feudal leadership

• Those who were less recalcitrant were pacified through concessions by


britishers

• The fights were unequal in nature. Inhabitants f oug ht with primitive


· eapons ,on the other hand british had sophisticated weapons.
