AAPHER TEST
Name of the test - AAHPER youth Physical Fitness Test.
Constructed in – 1958, Revised in 1965 and Again Revised in 1976

Constructed for – School Boys and Girls
Purpose of the Test – To measure the Arm & shoulder strength,
explosive strength, cardiovascular Endurance, Speed, Agility
Abdominal & Hip strength and coordinative Ability.
Equipments – Paper–Pen, Bar, mat, 400 meter track, stop watch etc.
Item of Test – There are 6 items (Batteries) in this test. (After
Revised)
Introduction :- In 1958, PAUL HUNSICKER's presided over the
research committee of AMERICAN ALLIANCE FOR HEALTH,
PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND RECREATION constructed a youth
physical fitness test. This test was revised in 1965. This test included
the following seven items:
1- Pull-ups (for boys) or flexed arm hang (for girls).
2- Sit-ups to a maximum of 50 for girls and 100 for boys.
3- Shuttle run.
4- Standing broad jump. 5- 50 yard dash.
6- Soft ball throw for distance. 7- 600 yard run-walk.
In 1976, AAHPER youth physical fitness test was again revised and
the following modification were made:
❑ The soft ball throw test item was deleted.
❑ Fixed number of straight leg sit-up test was changed to bent knee
sit-up performed in 60 seconds.
❑ 600 yard run-walk was made optional and the individuals opt for
other 600 yard run-walk or 9 minute run-walk or 1 mile (for age 10
to 12) run-walk or 1.5 mile run-walk, 12 minute run-walk (for age
13 and above).
The AAHPER Youth Physical Fitness Test is to be conducted in two
days as mentioned below:
Day 1-
❑ Pull-ups or flexed arm hang
❑ Bent-knee sit-ups
❑ Shuttle run
Day 2-
❑ Standing broad jump
❑ 50 Meter Dash
❑ 600 yard run-walk or opt by individuals.
1- PULL-UP (BOYS) OR FLEXED ARM HANG (GIRLS)
PURPOSE:- To Measure Arm & Shoulder Strength.
EQUIPMENTS:- A wooden or metal bar approximately 1.5 inches in
diameter and stopwatch.
PULL-UP
TEST ADMINISTRATION:- The height of the bar should be such
that when the subject hangs from it with fully extended arms, his feet
do not touch the ground. The subject grasp a bar above the head with
palm facing forward, then pulls up until the chin is above the bar, then
return the body to a full extension hang and repeat the pull-ups as
many times as possible. Only 1 trail is given.
SCORING:- :- The maximum number of complete pull-ups is the
score of the subject.
FLEXED ARM HANG
TEST ADMINISTRATION:- With the help of two assistant, the girl
raises the body off the floor to position the chin above the bar, the
elbows are flexed, chest is kept closed to the bar and the timer starts
the stopwatch. subject holds the position as long as possible.
SCORING :- The duration of time which the girl holds the hanging
position in the correct manner, recorded in seconds is the score of
this item.
2- BENT-KNEE SIT-UP
PURPOSE:- To Measure Abdominal Strength.
EQUIPMENTS:- A mat for each subject or lying area on the floor
and a stopwatch.
TEST ADMINISTRATION:- The subject is asked to lie on the back
with the knees bent feet on the floor and heels not more than 12"
from the buttocks. The angle at the knees should be less than 90°.
The subject has to put the hands on the back of the neck with finger
clasped and has to place the elbows squarely on the mat.
The subject feet are to be hold by an assistant or partner to keep them
in touch the elbows to the knees. The subject has to continue the
process for 1 minute
SCORING:-The number of correctly performed sit-ups in 60
seconds is the score of this test.
3- SHUTTLE RUN
PURPOSE:- To Measure Agility & Coordinative Ability.
EQUIPMENTS:- Two blocks of wood a stopwatch and marking
powder.
TEST ADMINISTRATION:- Two parallel lines are marked on the
floor 10 yards apart. The two wooden blocks are placed behind the
returning line. The subject is asked to start from the starting line on
the signal ready? Go, the timer starts the watch and the subject runs
towards the returning line, pickup one block, runs back to the other
line and places the block behind the starting line, runs back and
pick-up the other block and place behind the starting line.
The timer stop the stopwatch and records the time.
SCORING:- Two trails are allowed to each subject with some rest
in between. The time of the better of the two trails are recorded to the
nearest 10th of a second as the score of the test item.
4- STANDING BROAD JUMP
PURPOSE:- To Measure Explosive strength of lower extremity.
EQUIPMENTS:- Floor, mat or long jump pit, measuring tape,
marking chalk.
TEST ADMINISTRATION:- The subject is asked to stand behind the
starting line with the feet parallel to each other. The subject is
instructed to jump as farthest as possible by bending knees and
swinging arms to take-off for the broad jump in the forward direction.
Hop and run is not allowed.
SCORING:- The distance between the starting line and the nearest
point of landing provides the score of the test.
5- 50 YARD DASH
PURPOSE:- To Measure Speed of the subject.
EQUIPMENTS:- Marked area, stopwatch.
TEST ADMINISTRATION:- Two lines are marked on the floor
50 yards apart. One line is used as starting line and other is finishing
line. On the signal ready? Go, the subject start running at their best
to reach the finish line at their earliest and the timer starts the watch
simultaneously.
SCORING:- The time taken to run 50 yards recorded in seconds is
the score of this test item.
6- 600 YARDS RUN-WALK
PURPOSE:- To Measure Cardiovascular Endurance.
EQUIPMENTS:- Track or marked area and stopwatch.
TEST ADMINISTRATION:- The subject is asked to take a
standing start at the signal ready? Go, the subject starts running the
600 yards distance. Walking is permitted but the performer is to
cover the distance in the shortest period of time.
SCORING:- The time taken to run 600 yards recorded in minutes
and seconds is the score of this test item.
