Summary of Patch Plate Repair
Procedures
This document summarizes the patch plate repair procedures as outlined in API 653, ASME
PCC-2, API 510, and API 570. These codes apply to pressure vessels, tanks, and piping
systems used in the petroleum and chemical industries.
1. API 653 (Tank Shells and Bottoms)
Applicable to: Aboveground storage tanks per API 650.
Shell Repairs (Section 9.3)
- Lapped Patch Plates (Lap-welded):
• Thickness ≤ 13 mm (1/2 in.) and not more than one-third thicker than adjacent shell
plate.
• Full fillet weld required around perimeter.
• May not overlap riveted seams, lap seams, or distorted/cracked areas.
• Shape: circular, square, oblong (rounded corners min. radius 50 mm).
• Maximum size: 1.2 m (V) × 1.8 m (H); minimum: 100 mm.
• Joint efficiency assumed: 0.35 (reinforcement) or 0.70 (hole closure).
Bottom Repairs (Section 9.11)
- Welded-on Patch Plates:
• Minimum size: 150 mm; overlap ≥ 50 mm over corroded area.
• Not to be installed over distorted/severely settled areas.
• Full seal weld required.
• Within critical zones: Max thickness 6 mm; tombstone shape within 150 mm of shell.
2. ASME PCC-2 (General Pressure Components)
Applicable to: Pressure vessels, piping, and components not limited to tanks.
Patch Plate Repairs (Article 207)
- Design Considerations:
• Plate thickness ≤ 1.5× component thickness.
• Overlap ≥ 25 mm onto sound base metal.
• Fillet welds sized for hoop/longitudinal forces.
• Plug/slot welds may address eccentricity.
• Avoid discontinuities unless full penetration design is used.
- Installation:
• Patch to fit tightly (max gap: 5 mm).
• Qualified welders/procedures per ASME IX.
• Inspect welds (MT/PT); clean base before welding.
• Vent holes required if gas entrapment is possible.
3. API 510 (Pressure Vessels)
Defers to ASME PCC-2 and API 579-1 for fitness-for-service. Key points:
• Repairs evaluated for pressure integrity.
• Authorized inspector must approve.
• Follow PCC-2 Article 207 or API 579-1 Part 5 or 9.
4. API 570 (Process Piping)
Outlines general repair practices:
• Requires engineering assessment for permanent repairs.
• Refer to ASME PCC-2 or API 579-1.
• Welding per ASME IX.
• Not advised for high-risk piping without full integrity assessment.
