SCIENCE
I) Prepare a working model for a science exhibition on health and hygiene or environmental
factors.

II) Learn all the written work from science fair notebook.

III) Complete the following work in fair notebook:

CASE STUDY 1: Some materials have been given in Table, complete the following table:

CASE STUDY 2: Metals and nonmetals exhibit distinct properties. Metals are generally shiny,
malleable (can be hammered into sheets), ductile (can be drawn into wires), and good conductors
of heat and electricity. Examples include copper, iron, and aluminum. In contrast, nonmetals are
typically dull, brittle (if solid), poor conductors, and have lower melting and boiling points. They are
often gases or solids at room temperature. Examples include oxygen, nitrogen, and chlorine.

Metals:

● Physical Properties:
○ Lustrous: Shiny and reflective.
○ Malleable: Can be hammered into thin sheets without breaking.
○ Ductile: Can be drawn into thin wires without breaking.
○ Good conductors of heat and electricity: Allow heat and electricity to flow easily
through them.
○ High melting and boiling points: Generally require higher temperatures to melt or
boil.
○ Generally solid at room temperature: With the exception of mercury.
○ High density: Typically heavy for their size.
● Examples: Copper, iron, aluminum, gold, silver.

Nonmetals:

● Physical Properties:
○ Dull: Not shiny or reflective.
○ Brittle: Tend to break or shatter when struck.
○ Poor conductors of heat and electricity: Do not allow heat and electricity to flow
easily through them.
○ Lower melting and boiling points: Generally require lower temperatures to melt or
boil.
○ May exist as solids, liquids, or gases at room temperature: Examples include
oxygen (gas), sulfur (solid), and bromine (liquid).
○ Low density: Typically lighter than metals.
● Examples: Oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine, sulfur, phosphorus

Ques1. Difference between metals and non metals with examples. (5-5 points)

CASE STUDY 3: When water in the oceans, rivers, lakes and other water bodies get heated due
to the heat of the Sun, it is transformed into water vapour. Plants and vegetation also release
water in the form of vapour by a process called transpiration. The air laden with water vapour, the
moist air, is warm and light. We have learnt in Activity W4.1 that the warm air expands, becomes
lighter and rises up. At higher altitudes, the moist air cools down and condenses into tiny water
droplets. The droplets merge, become heavy and fall down on the earth as rain, snow or hail (the
phenomenon is called precipitation). The rain water and the snow, when it melts due to the heat of
the sun, flows back into the rivers and eventually into the oceans and other water bodies. A small
part of this water also seeps into the ground, where it gets stored as groundwater, the process is
called infiltration. We dig wells into the groundwater and draw water for our use. Note that
whatever water was lost as vapour, comes back in the form of rain, snow or hail. This is called the
water cycle. Two important points must be noted. * The total water content of the planet earth is
conserved in this process. * By redistributing water over different regions, it helps in maintaining
the life on the earth.
Ques1. Define the following terms:

a. Transpiration

b. Evaporation

c. Condensation

Ques2. Draw a well labelled diagram of water cycle.

CASE STUDY 4: A human being is born as a child, grows gradually and becomes an adult.
During growth, the human body undergoes various changes. This entire transition phase or
period between childhood and adulthood is called adolescence. The growing children or
adolescents are also called teenagers because of the teen years. Puberty can be defined as
the beginning of the changes that lead to sexual maturity of a child. The physical changes
associated with puberty include—increase in height, breast development and menstruation in
girls, deeper voice in boys, appearance of pimples on face, etc.

Specific Changes:

● Increase in Height: A growth spurt leads to a noticeable increase in height.

● Change in Body Shape: Boys develop broader shoulders and increased muscle
mass, while girls' hips widen and their waist narrows.
● Voice Change: Boys experience a deepening of their voice, sometimes referred to as
"voice breaking," while girls' voices may become slightly higher pitched.
● Development of Secondary Sexual Characteristics: This includes the growth of
hair in underarms and pubic areas, as well as facial hair in boys. Girls experience
breast development and the onset of menstruation.
● Increased Sweat and Sebaceous Gland Activity: This can lead to more sweating
and acne.
● Mental, Intellectual, and Emotional Maturity: Puberty also involves significant
changes in cognitive and emotional development.

Ques1. Complete the table

Ques2. Behavioural changes:

Ques3. create posters with the aim of spreading awareness among the common
people. The posters could have the following contents— (any 1)

(a)Slogans and visuals promoting menstrual hygiene and breaking stigma. (b) Menstrual cycle
education for everyone. (c) Myths and facts about menstruation.

Ques4. List 5-5 changes that take place in boys and girls during puberty.

SOCIAL SCIENCE

CASE STUDY-1

A solution of slaked lime produced by the reaction is used for white washing walls. Calcium hydroxide
reacts slowly with the carbon dioxide in air to form a thin layer of calcium carbonate on the walls. Calcium
carbonate is formed after two to three days of white washing and gives a shiny finish to the walls. It is
interesting to note that the chemical formula for marble is also CaCO3.

On the basis of above paragraph answer the following questions:

1.) Give the reaction for the formation of calcium carbonate with physical states.

2.) Write the formulas of slaked lime, quick lime.

3) Explain why calcium carbonate is used for white washing and not any other substance.

4) Explain the importance of writing the physical states in a chemical equation.

CASE STUDY : 2

You must have observed that iron articles are shiny when new, but get coated with a reddish brown
powder when left for some time. This process is commonly known as rusting of iron. Some other metals
also get tarnished in this manner. Have you noticed the colour of the coating formed on copper and silver?
When a metal is attacked by substances around it such as moisture, acids, etc., it is said to corrode and
this process is called corrosion. The black coating on silver and the green coating on copper are other
examples of corrosion.

1.) Explain one benefit of corrosion.

2.) Write the formula of corrosion of iron.

3.) If corrosion occurs in the case of iron articles, why is the iron pillar at Qutub Minar not effected?

4.) Write any two ways to prevent rusting.

5.) What do you mean by galvanization?

CASE STUDY : 3

Arjun learns about combination reactions and spends a day long in the lab figuring out if they absorb or
release heat. He performs an experiment in which he adds water to quicklime in a beaker.
1.) How will he confirm that heat is absorbed or released in this experiment?

2.) Write a balanced chemical equation for above process shown.

3.) All endothermic reactions are decomposition reactions. Comment.

4.) Reaction 1: 2AgBr sunlight→ Ag+ Br2

Choose the correct observation:

A. Reaction 1 and Reaction 2 are both endothermic reactions.

B. Reaction 1 and Reaction 2 are both exothermic reactions.

C. Reaction 1 is endothermic reaction and Reaction 2 is exothermic reaction.

D. Reaction 1 is exothermic reaction and Reaction 2 is endothermic reaction.

CASE STUDY: 4

Richa has been feeling a pain in her chest or upper abdomen nearly every evening, especially right before
bed or right when she lies down. Her husband tells her it must be heartburn, but truthfully Richa did not
understand what heartburn really meant until she googled it. Now she is starting to suspect that maybe her
diet is involved.

Read the following excerpt from the patient’s interview:-

Doctor: So tell me more about this pain you mentioned.

Richa: Well the pain in my chest is happening most nights around 9 or 10pm. We usually eat dinner
late--around 8pm because it takes a while to cook after we get home from work.

Doctor: Does anyone you know have this problem?

Richa: My mom always used to complain about “the burn in her chest” after our spicier meals, but I thought
she was being dramatic. Now I think I know what she meant.

Doctor: Ok, let’s get back to the chest pain. When did you first started noticing this problem?

Richa: About six weeks ago

Doctor: And how often does it happen?

Richa: Every night. The only time I don’t get it is at night if I eat something really bland for dinner, like a
sandwich.

Doctor: Is there anything that you’ve noticed makes it worse?

Richa: Generally when I eat a lot or it’s really spicy, it’s worse than usual.

Answer the questions below:

1. Where does the Mechanical digestion begins?

2. Identify which anatomical regions are problematic for Richa?

3. What is the role of gastric juices in the stomach?

CASE STUDY 5:

The human heart is an organ that pumps blood throughout the body via the circulatory system, supplying
oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and removing carbon dioxide and other wastes. It is located in the
center of the chest, usually pointing slightly left. The tissues of the body need a constant supply of nutrition
in order to be active. If the heart is not able to supply blood to the organs and tissues, they will die. It is
generally observed that if heart is taken out of the body, it still keeps on beating. This indicates that it has
its own generating system and rhythm. The human heart has four chambers.

1. How many chambers are present in the heart of a frog?

2. What do you mean by double circulation?

3. Name the valves present in the heart? What is its role?

6. Study and learn questions of Life processess in given work sheet.

7. Write following practicals in practical copy:

1. Performing and observing the following reactions and classifying them into:
A. Combination reaction
