Children today are too dependent on computers and electronic entertainment.

It would be
better for them to be outside playing sports and taking part in more traditional past times
than spending all day indoors. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

In today’s digital age, children are increasingly spending more time on computers and electronic
devices, often at the expense of outdoor activities and traditional pastimes. This shift has sparked
debate on whether children would benefit more from engaging in physical sports and other outdoor
activities rather than remaining indoors. I firmly agree that children should be encouraged to
participate in more traditional activities.

Firstly, physical activity is essential for the overall development of children. Engaging in sports and
outdoor games promotes physical health, helps in building strong muscles and bones, and reduces
the risk of obesity. For instance, children who regularly play soccer or engage in other sports are
more likely to maintain a healthy weight and develop better cardiovascular health compared to
those who spend prolonged periods in front of screens. Beyond physical benefits, outdoor activities
also contribute to better mental health by reducing stress and anxiety, which are often exacerbated
by excessive screen time. Therefore, integrating more physical activities into children’s routines can
significantly enhance their well-being.

Secondly, traditional pastimes and outdoor play offer valuable social skills that electronic
entertainment cannot provide. Activities like team sports, group games, and community events
foster teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities. For example, playing in a local
baseball league requires children to cooperate, strategize, and handle both wins and losses
gracefully. These interactions help build interpersonal skills and can lead to more fulfilling social
experiences. Conversely, excessive screen time often isolates children and limits their opportunities
to develop such crucial social skills.

In conclusion, while electronic entertainment has its place, it is crucial for children to balance their
time with outdoor activities and traditional pastimes. Therefore, parents and educators should
prioritise creating opportunities for children to participate in outdoor and interactive activities,
ensuring a well-rounded and healthy lifestyle.
