Alexithymia and Social Media in Nursing Students

The study investigates the relationship between alexithymia and social media addiction among nursing students at Benha University, revealing that nearly half of the participants exhibit moderate social media addiction and over half show possible alexithymia. A significant positive correlation was found between the levels of social media addiction and alexithymia. The authors recommend incorporating education on the risks of social media addiction into nursing curricula to mitigate its adverse effects on students' health.

Abstract
Back ground: Nursing students need to be aware of the optimal use of the social media because they spend a
lot of time conducting scientific research that complements the academic curriculum, but when a nursing student
becomes unable to control the use of the platform’s, this leads to internet addiction and this will affect their
physical, psychological and social health . Aim: This study aimed to explore the relation between alexithymia
and social media among nursing students. .Design: Correlational research design was used in the current study.
Sample: quota sample Consists of 352 Nursing was chosen from the four- grades students of Faculty of
Nursing, Benha University. Tools: Three tools were used (1st tool): Structured Interview Questionnaire sheet.
(2nd tool): Toronto Alexithymia Scale. (3rd tool): Social Media Scale Student Form. Results: nearly half
(48.6%) of the studied students have moderate level of social media addiction and more than half (51.1%) of the
studied students have possible alexithymia level. Conclusion: there was a highly statistically positive
correlation between total level of social media addiction and total level of alexithymia. Recommendations: The
hazards and determinants of social media addiction should be added to the educational curricula and the
methods that must be followed to avoid its adverse effects on physical, psychological, and social well.
Key words: Alexithymia, Nursing Students, and Social Media

Moderate levels of social media addiction among nursing students highlight their struggle to balance educational commitments and the allure of online platforms . Social media offers an accessible means of relaxation and social interaction, which becomes appealing in the demanding context of nursing education . The pressure to stay updated and connected with peers on social media can overshadow the importance of academic priorities and reduce face-to-face communication skills, crucial for their profession . Thus, this addiction reflects broader challenges in managing time and stress among students.

Alexithymia significantly hampers the communication and emotional competence necessary for effective nursing education and practice. Nursing requires high emotional intelligence, empathy, and good communication skills. However, students with alexithymia face challenges in expressing emotions and understanding the emotional needs of patients . This condition leads to inadequate emotional responses and communication issues, posing a barrier to building therapeutic relationships with patients and colleagues . Furthermore, the lack of empathy and difficulty in emotion recognition can impede active listening and empathetic engagement, essential components in nursing care .

The research study involved several demographic and psychometric tools to analyze social media addiction levels among nursing students. Demographic data included the students’ age, sex, marital status, educational grade, residence, family income, parents' working status, and family stability . Psychometrically, the Social Media Scale Student Form (SMAS-SF) was utilized to evaluate levels of social media addiction across dimensions such as virtual tolerance, communication, problem, and information . This scale, along with the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, was validated for reliability using Cronbach's alpha, ensuring accuracy in measuring addictive behaviors and emotional processing difficulties among students .

Excessive social media use negatively impacts the academic performance of nursing students by contributing to behavioral addiction, resulting in less time for study and academic activities . It leads to disconnection from real-life responsibilities and lower academic achievement due to distraction and compulsive checking of social media . Behavioral factors such as fear of missing out (FOMO) and the compulsive need for virtual socialization divert students' attention from academic tasks . This compulsive use diminishes the time available for studying and affects students' ability to concentrate on educational responsibilities.

Research indicates a significant positive correlation between alexithymia and social media addiction in nursing students. Alexithymia, characterized by difficulty in identifying and describing emotions, tends to lead individuals to rely on social media as a substitute for real-world connections and emotional support. Students with alexithymia are likely to perceive social media as a safer, less risky environment for interaction, thereby increasing their usage, resulting in social media addiction . Furthermore, the lack of emotional expressiveness and empathy in alexithymics can exacerbate feelings of loneliness, which may drive them to seek more social engagement via online platforms .

High levels of social media usage among nursing students can detrimentally affect their psychological well-being and social integration. Students experiencing social media addiction often face issues like anxiety, depression, and loneliness, stemming from the constant need for online validation and interaction . This heightened online engagement can result in impaired real-life social skills, leading to poorer interpersonal relationships and a decreased sense of community support. Psychologically, the reliance on virtual connections over face-to-face interactions might hamper the development of essential communication skills needed in nursing practice . Over time, these issues could increase burnout and turnover rates in the nursing profession.

Alexithymia contributes to feelings of loneliness in university students by impairing their ability to recognize and express emotions, leading to fewer close relationships and limited social support networks . The emotional disconnect characteristic of alexithymia can make forming trusting interpersonal relationships difficult, exacerbating feelings of isolation . In the context of social media addiction, this is significant because such students might over-rely on digital platforms to fulfill social needs, perceiving them as safer environments to interact without the risks of direct emotional engagement. Consequently, their dependency on social media increases, reinforcing a cycle of loneliness and addiction .

The main tools used for data collection in the study were a self-administered questionnaire, the Social Media Scale Student Form (SMAS-SF), and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS). The SMAS-SF, consisting of items related to various domains of social media addiction, was translated into Arabic and its content validity reviewed by psychiatric nursing experts. Both scales underwent reliability assessment using Cronbach's alpha, yielding high reliability scores of 0.897 for the SMAS-SF and 0.955 for the TAS, indicating their trustworthiness for evaluating students' addiction and emotional conditions .

The psychiatric nurse's role in managing social media addiction involves three phases: assessment, treatment, and relapse prevention. In the assessment phase, nurses help students evaluate their online behaviors . During the treatment phase, nurses encourage students to develop time management skills and explore strategies for real-life social engagement to mitigate feelings of loneliness. In the relapse phase, they work with students to identify triggers, understand the benefits of recovery, and develop healthier alternatives to social media use . The structured approach aims to provide holistic support and prevent relapse into addictive behaviors.

The study employed a correlational research design to investigate the relationship between social media addiction and alexithymia among nursing students . This design was chosen because it allows researchers to determine the strength and direction of relationships between variables without manipulating them, making it suitable for examining existing associations in a non-experimental manner. By analyzing the scores from the Toronto Alexithymia Scale and Social Media Scale, the study aimed to identify the prevalence of each condition and the degree to which they co-occur in the student population .
