When you read the history of music in films, you are often surprised by how
much has changed over the years. Film directors originally started using
music in the 1930s, when cinema first started, because the films were silent.
The background music you heard when you entered the dark cinema was
comforting and it set the mood for the film. A scary scene had loud music, a
romantic scene had gentle sounds. In the 1940s that music was jazz and then
it was rock in the 1960s. Since then, the concept of both films and music has
changed dramatically. People go to the cinema for a complete experience,
including the big screen, special effects and the music. This has become more
important and more enjoyable. Famous musicians have recorded 'the' theme
song to a film and they have increased their popularity through them, for
example, Adele with 'Skyfall'. They then sell more albums or eps. In addition,
many classical pieces have become famous again in a different context and
people have bought the CDs or downloaded the music. Audiences now identify
film series by their soundtrack and TV series have started using them too.
