Reglan (Metoclopramide) Nursing Guide

1) Metoclopramide (Reglan) is an antiemetic medication given intravenously to treat nausea and block dopamine receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone. 2) It has a rapid onset of 1-3 minutes, duration of action of 1-2 hours, and is given every 6 hours as needed by intravenous push over 1-2 minutes. 3) Nursing implications for this medication include monitoring for extrapyramidal side effects like dystonia, assessing for contraindications like seizure disorders or depression, and teaching the patient about potential drowsiness and not driving until the effects are known.
