Statement of Purpose - Oluwadare Ayoola - MSc applicant - Computer Science
It is a basic human right to have access to clean water, and yet the country I love in has deprived millions
of people of that. I firmly believe technology has the key in the turnaround of such pressing issues of our
time. My final-year project in fact made me see just how much potential data-driven solutions have for
real-world problems, and that is a prediction system of water quality using machine learning. My
collaboration with a postdoctoral computer scientist further stirred within me that ardent desire to
apply advanced computing techniques toward improving the lower-income and poor phases of at-risk
communities regarding their water quality. I remember a popular quote from Mahatma Gandhi stating,
'Be the change you want to see in the world.' With this master's program, I would like to become that
change— translating algorithms and codes into results that make people's lives being better.
My background in computer science has been filled with extensive training in programming skills, data
structures, and algorithms. Work on my final-year project provided experience applying machine
learning techniques to environmental data, thereby honing my skills with data analysis and predictive
modeling. My time with a postdoctoral mentor was transformative. Through passionate discussions and
hands-on work, I gained insights into cutting-edge research methods and technologies. This experience
helped enhance my technical abilities and also highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary
approaches in dealing with complex issues. In this respect, I am interested to learn more about recent
issues in topics associated with AI, big data analytics, and IoT technologies. I have been thrilled by the
dynamism in this industry and pledge my commitment to an ongoing path of learning and development.
The Master's program promises to provide me with a more sophisticated expertise and knowledge able
to take my career to the next level, hence giving me the power toward meaningful contributions in
water quality management and beyond.
