Class 8 ,science chaptre 10 (Sound)

Que5. A pendulum oscillates 40 times in 4 seconds. Find its time period and frequency.
Answer: Frequency means how many times the pendulum swings in 1 second.
Frequency = Number of oscillations ÷ Time
➡️Frequency = 40 ÷ 4 = 10 Hz
(This means the pendulum swings 10 times in 1 second)
 Time period means the time taken for one complete swing (oscillation).
Time Period = 1 ÷ Frequency
➡️Time Period = 1 ÷ 10 = 0.1 seconds
Que6. The sound from a mosquito is produced when it vibrates its wings at 500 vibrations per
second. What is the time period?
Answer: Given: Frequency = 500 Hz
Time Period = 1 ÷ Frequency
➡️Time Period = 1 ÷ 500 = 0.002 seconds
📌 So, each vibration of the mosquito’s wings takes only 0.002 seconds!
Que7. What vibrates to produce sound in these instruments?
Answer: (a) Dholak – A dholak has a tight skin (membrane) on both sides. When you hit it, this
membrane vibrates and produces sound.
 (b) Sitar – A sitar has strings. When you pluck a string, it vibrates and creates musical sound.
 (c) Flute – A flute has holes and a hollow tube. When you blow air into it, the air inside
vibrates, making a sound.
Que.8. What is the difference between noise and music? Can music become noise sometimes?
Answer:
Music Noise
Pleasant to hear Unpleasant to hear
Has a regular pattern No pattern, random
E.g., songs, instruments E.g., traffic, shouting
Que9. What are the sources of noise pollution around you?
Answer: Some common sources are:
 Honking of cars and bikes
 Loudspeakers and DJs
 Construction work (drilling, hammering)
 Loud music or TV
 Firecrackers
 Machines in factories
Que10. How is noise pollution harmful to humans?
Answer: Above 80 db (decible) the noise becomes physically painful. Several health issues are
associated with noise pollution. They are as follows:
(a) Stress (b) Headache (c) Hearing loss (d) Insomnia (e) Hypertension
Que11. Your parents are buying a house. One is on the roadside, and one is 3 lanes away. Which
one should they buy? Why?
Answer: I would suggest my parents to buy a house which is three lanes away from the roadside
because it will involve less pollution of air and noise. A house near roadside will have more pollution
due to vehicles. Road traffic noise is harmful for health of the people living in that area.
Que12. What is larynx? Draw and explain its function.
Answer: The larynx is also called the voice box.
 It is a hollow tube present in our throat, between the mouth and the windpipe.
 Inside the larynx, there are two vocal cords.
 When air passes through these cords, they vibrate and produce sound.
 The vibration of vocal cords is how we talk, sing, shout, etc.
🟣 Function of Larynx:
1. Produces sound: It helps us speak by making the vocal cords vibrate.
2. Controls pitch: If the vocal cords are tight, the pitch becomes high; if they are loose, the pitch
becomes low.
3. Protects windpipe: It also keeps food and liquid from entering the windpipe when we swallow.
13. Why do we see lightning first and hear thunder later, even if they happen at the same time?
Answer:"Speed of sound is 330 m/s and speed of light is 300,000,000 m/s. Light travels much faster
than sound that is why lightning is seen earlier and thunder is heard."
Extra Que1 Does any part of our body vibrate when we speak? Name the part.
Answer: Yes, a part of our body does vibrate when we speak. The part is called the vocal cords (also
known as voice box or larynx).
When air from the lungs passes through the vocal cords, they vibrate and produce sound. These
vibrations help us speak.
Extra Que2 Two astronauts are floating close to each other in space. Can they talk to each other
without using any special device? Give reasons.
Answer: No, two astronauts cannot talk to each other in space without using any special device.
Reason: Sound needs a medium (like air, water, or solid) to travel.
 In space, there is no air or any other medium — it is a vacuum.
 So, sound cannot travel from one astronaut to the other.
That’s why astronauts use radio communication devices in their helmets to talk to each other in space.
