Note: Answer all the sections.
Section-A
A. Attempt all the parts. (4x2 -08)
1. Apply MO theory to arrange the following molecules/ ions in increasing order of bond length Oz, O2,
O;, O,and 0,:.
2. Define nanomaterials. Give any four applications of nanomaterials.
3. Differentiate between scales and sludges.
4. 100 mL of water sample has a hardness equivalent of 18.5 mL of 0.05N CaSO4. Calculate its
hardness in ppm?
Section-B
B. Attempt all the parts. (4x4 = 16)

5. llustrate any six principles of green chemistry and prepare paracetamol via green synthesis.
6. Describe the structure, preparation, properties and applications of an allotrope of carbon having truncated
icosahedron structure.
7. What is reverse osmosis? Also mention its advantages and important applications.
8. 100 mL of standard water containing 1.5 mg of pure CaC0z/mL consumed 35 mL of EDTA. 100 mL of
a water sample consumed 22 mL of same EDTA solution using EBT as indicator. After boiling 100 mL
of water sample consumed 15 mL of same EDTA solution using EBT as indicator. Calculate the
temporary, permanent and total hardness of the water sample in ppm.
Section-C
C. Attempt all the parts. (2x 8=16)
9. Attempt any one.
a) Draw the molecular orbital diagram of CO & O,. Calculate their bond order and comment on their
magnetic behavior.
b) Describe the classification of liquid crystals. Distinguish between nematic and smectic liquid crystals.
Give their important applications.
10. Attempt any one.

a) Illustrate the principle of lime soda process. Calculate the amount of lime (80% pure) and soda (74%
pure) needed for softening 50,000L of water containing the following salts: CaCO3 = 40.0mg/L,
NaAIO: = 8.2mg/L, Al,(SO:), = 11.4mg/L, Mg(HCO:)2 = 7.3mg/L, CO; = 4.4mg/L, HCI =
73.0mg/L, NaHCOs =8.1mg/L and KCl= 50.0 mg/L. If 15% chemical are used in excess in order
to complete the reaction quickly.
b) Explain the demineralization process of water softening. A zeolite softener was 90% exhausted by
removing the hardness completely when 40,000 Lof hard water sample passed through it.The exhausted
zeolite bed required 150 L of 8% sodium chloride solution for its complete regeneration. Calculate the
hardness of water solution and also express it in terms of 'Fr and 'CI.
