A series of one-stage oxygen-alkaline treatments on unbleached, and fully bleached
southern pine kraft pulps were studied employing a ruthenium pyrochlore oxide catalyst.
The results demonstrated that 0.18% of catalyst application provided 77-100% increase
of carboxylic acid groups in the carbohydrate fraction (holocellulose) without a
significant decrease the fiber viscosity. The enhanced carboxylic acid in oxygen
delignified pulp could be partially carried through after fully bleaching sequence
(D(E+O)DD).
