O2 Delig. Catalyst

The document discusses a study on the chemical modification of pulp fibers through selective catalytic oxidation during oxygen delignification, using a ruthenium pyrochlore oxide catalyst. Results showed that a 0.18% catalyst application significantly increased carboxylic acid groups in the holocellulose fraction while maintaining fiber viscosity. This enhancement in carboxylic acid content was partially retained after the bleaching process.

A series of one-stage oxygen-alkaline treatments on unbleached, and fully bleached

southern pine kraft pulps were studied employing a ruthenium pyrochlore oxide catalyst.
The results demonstrated that 0.18% of catalyst application provided 77-100% increase
of carboxylic acid groups in the carbohydrate fraction (holocellulose) without a
significant decrease the fiber viscosity. The enhanced carboxylic acid in oxygen
delignified pulp could be partially carried through after fully bleaching sequence
(D(E+O)DD).
