1. INTRODUCTION
Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the

absence of disease or infirmity. Thus, its an individual rights to be healthy. As,

population-based studies have found that more than one half of an average person's

waking day involves sedentary activities ubiquitously associated with prolonged

sitting, such as watching television and using the computer. 1 Even a systematic

review with its meta analysis has concluded in their studies that prolonged

sedentary time and independent of physical activity is positively associated with

various deleterious health outcomes. 2 In 2018, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

found that many jobs in America were largely sedentary, meaning workers spent

most of their time sitting. Roles like bill and account collectors, financial analysts,

and software developers topped the list, with over 95% of workers in those positions

having minimal physical demands. Office- based jobs such as accountants, tax

preparers, and HR specialists followed closely behind. On the flip side, jobs that

involve more movement like construction managers, dental hygienists, and

especially teacher assistants were far less sedentary. This shows how the nature of

work can really differ depending on the field, with many modern careers leaning

more toward desk- bound routines. 3

Among several jobs, recently India's Stock Market (SM) investor base surpassed

8.5 crore by December 2023, marking a 22.4% increase from the previous year.4

Additionally, Gujarat added 8 lakh new equity investors in just five months,

bringing the total to 81 lakh by early 2024. 5 Among them, a significant portion of

new investors are young individuals from peri-urban and rural areas, attracted by

higher returns and facilitated by digital platforms .6

1
The SM, sometimes referred to as the equity or share market, is essentially a

network where stocks are bought and sold. In India, the SM operates Monday to

Friday from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM. It remains closed on weekends and official trading

holidays declared by National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock

Exchange (BSE). In South Asia, the stock markets of countries like India are closely

connected. For example, the NSE Nifty index in India often moves in sync with

other major markets in the region, showing how these economies and their

investors are increasingly interdependent. Prediction is one of the biggest

challenges for any research area. If a successful prediction is achieved, then that

can smoothen the livelihood of the people. One of the most challenging time-series

prediction research areas is the stock trend prediction because of its nonlinearity

and highly dynamic behavior. The SM is also suffered from unpredictable events

that have a serious negative impact on it and is called the Black Swan events. If the

successful stock trend is predicted, then the SM regulators and the investors can

develop better trading strategies, which helps them to reduce the risk of the

investment and also increase profitability. Thus a person associated with trading

needs to focus / engage himself till market hours constantly in front of any screen

in order to constant hours of sitting without engaging in appropriate Physical

Activity (PA) is termed as Sedentary Lifestyle (SL). Some reasons have

contributed to the sharp decline in daily PA including the use of computers, and

prolonged desk sitting in offices. These factors have also contributed to the

emergence of the SM. Over 80% of adults and adolescents do not meet the

recommended levels of physical exercise, according to the World Health

Organization (WHO), which raises the prevalence of health problems linked to

inactivity. It appears as the development of obesity, heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes

2
Mellitus (T2DM), and mental health conditions such anxiety and depression. 10

Lifestyle disorders are illnesses that are linked to a person's lifestyle or way of life.

Since they do not spread from person to person once they are diagnosed, they are

also known as Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). According to a WHO

research, NCDs have caused a rise in the death rate in low-income and

impoverished nations (WHO). Chronic in nature, these NCDs are frequently

brought on by bad lifestyle choices, unwanted behaviors, ongoing stress, poor

eating habits, sedentary behavior, and social media addiction. NCDs are more

common in people who lead SL due to table work and stress-related jobs. T2DM,

cancer, and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the three main lifestyle conditions

that cause the greatest number of deaths. Metabolic risk factors are those that raise

the risk of NCDs by altering the metabolism, these includes hyperglycemia,

hyperlipidemia, obesity, and elevated blood pressure. 11

3
2. LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1STOCK MARKET AND LSD

A meta-analysis conducted by Hui Lian et.al took a close look at cardiovascular

mortality and stroke incidents, exploring how fluctuations in the SM might be

linked to cardiovascular health outcomes. Beyond traditional risk factors, the

review highlights psychosocial stress triggered by market volatility as a potential

contributor to CVD. They reveal a 1.01% increase in cardiovascular mortality for

every 100-point increase in SM value. However, this rise wasn't found to be

statistically significant. Interestingly, the data does reveal a notable correlation

between stock market changes and stroke incidents, with an estimated effect of

nearly 3%. This review also points out that the effects of market volatility on

cardiovascular mortality may not be immediate. On the contrary, these effects may

persist for a few days. At last, in the closure to the study it was said that there may

be the ill effect and likely important consequence on cardiovascular and stroke

mortality due to stock market fluctuations, even with the small number of studies

and some methodological restrictions. This statement focuses on the need to

develop public health strategies by keeping both economic and psychosocial factor

into consideration.12

2.2 HYPERTENSION AND LSD

Any Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) of 140 mm Hg or more, or a Diastolic Blood

Pressure (DBP) of 90 mm Hg, is considered hypertension. According to the census

of 2024, Prevalence of hypertension in Gujrat is 1,40,14,000 which is 20% of total

population. 13 Zehra et al conducted the cross-sectional survey in which they said that

4
by 2025, the prevalence of hypertension worldwide is predicted to increase up to

29%. It is known to raise the risk of several illnesses, including blindness, kidney

failure, heart attacks, and strokes. 14 There are various direct and indirect methods

to measure the blood pressure. Direct intra-arterial measurement with a catheter is

the gold standard for measuring arterial blood pressure. However, indirect

measuring techniques like the palpatory and auscultatory methods which measure

pressure using a stethoscope and sphygmomanometer are more frequently

employed. 15

A study conducted by Gwang KIm A et al in his retrospective study, done among

586 male and 1135 females of > 20 years of age had participants stated that one of

the main risk factors for heart failure, stroke, renal disease, and coronary heart

disease is hypertension. However, they are unsure if hypertension or something else

was the cause as both hereditary and behavioral factors contribute to the

development of hypertension. Along with that, factors like age, gender, body type,

and family history. Study also focused on acquired and modifiable risk factors like

heavy drinking, smoking, poor nutrition, and a lack of PA. They even said that the

risk of CVD rises as a result of market volatility. 16

2.3 DM AND LSD

According to the census of 2023, the prevalence of diabetes in Gujrat is 57,43,520

17
which is which is 8% of total population. The study done by the Pandit et. al

concluded from his epidemiological study that third most common lifestyle

disorder in the population is diabetes mellitus as it is linked to an increase in the

body's blood glucose levels. Hyperglycemia is indicated by high blood glucose

5
levels, while hypoglycemia is indicated by low blood glucose levels which can be

evaluation of diabetes was held by glucometer and it was documented in mg/dl. 18

A review conducted by Hamilton et. al stated that it is noteworthy that two recent

studies involving type 2 diabetes in both adults and children based on self-reported

total sitting time found that higher lifetime sitting time seemed to be linked to

diabetes regardless of BMI. 19

2.4 OBESITY AND LSD

As mentioned in the systematic review by Ahirwar et.al stated, that the Indian

population is affected by 13.5 million due to obesity. 20 Obesity is now referred to

as Globosity by the WHO due to its global impact. Obesity is a key metabolic risk

factor for 65% of NCD deaths, according to National Family and Health survey

(NFHS-5). Obesity levels have been linked to numerous diseases and morbidities
21
in health survey and WHO reports. The unhealthy lifestyle with most of time

spent physically inactive or transition to industrialized world with most of the sitting

jobs more involvement in watching TV, playing video games along with much time

spent on mobile phone along with pass time munching is considered as one of the

major cause of obesity. 22

2.5 STRESS AND LSD

Saoji A et al published in their study that, in today's environment, financial stress

is becoming more and more prevalent. In addition to other NCDs, it might have

psychological repercussions like anxiety and sadness. A day trader is an individual

investor who buys and sells the same quantity of the same stock in a single trading

day, completing a full round-trip trade. A day trader, typically a man in his late

6
30s, is required to withstand the extremes of volatile market swings, significant

financial losses, and future financial uncertainty. Many anxiety disorders are

characterized by the subjective sensation of distress along with concomitant

disruptions in sleep, concentration, social, and/or vocational functioning. 23

7
3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

“Sitting is new smoking”, and thus many non-communicable diseases are caused

due to sedentary work environment for occupation. Among them, one of the

occupation is stock market trader. They have to daily face market volatility either

in positive or negative manner. Thus, it becomes very much necessary to identify

the prevalence and association of selected lifestyle disorders among young adult

individuals engaged in stock market trading for the cities of central and western

Gujarat.

8
4 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

Many studies have established occupation related diseases, among which majority

are communicable diseases. The studies on NCDs due to occupation are less. Even

there are the evidences proving the risk of CVD with stock market volatility. But the

studies are lacking for the lifestyle related diseases in SMT This might be the new

study for establishing the linkage of selected lifestyle related diseases among young

adult individuals involved in stock market trading for the cities of central and western

Gujarat.
