Jipi Jay
By: Alexis Avalos Aquino
The most famous version
was sung by Pepe Vásquez,
a well-known Afro-
Peruvian musician.
The melody is based on the traditional
Scottish song “Auld Lang Syne”, originally
written in the 18th century. But, the Peruvian
adaptation, known as "Jipi Jay", became
popular in the 1980s, for Pepe Vásquez.
The song is about saying
goodbye, but in a hopeful and
friendly. It reflects on
friendship, memories, and the
hope of meeting again
someday.
It doesn’t tell a detailed story, but it
expresses a strong emotional message. It
speaks of parting ways with friends, it isn't
something sad, but as a “see you later.” It
captures the feeling of farewell with joy
and hope.
I like this song because it’s emotional,
festive, and very nostalgic. It brings people
together in moments of farewell,
especially in graduations, school events,
and celebrations. The rhythm is friendly,
and the lyrics are touching. It reminds us
that every goodbye can be the beginning
of a new meeting.
