What is a literary genre?
It is a category of literary composition.
Genres may be determined by literary
technique, tone, content, or even (as in
the case of fiction) length.
 They are defined by the general cultural
movement of the historical period in
which they were composed.
What is referred to as the earlier period?
 This period is referred to as the pre-
colonial period or the period long before
the Spaniards set foot on the Philippine
islands.
Most of ancient Philippine literature was
really oral consisting of folk narratives,
riddles, proverbs, sayings, songs, ritual
chants, and epics and was definitely
community-bound.

part of the 21st century (from 2001 onwards)

Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for Literature

• Organized by the Carlos Palanca Foundation, The


Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for
Literature (CPMAL) is the longest running literary award
in the Philippines. CPMAL was established in 1950 to
inspire Filipino writers to improve their literary works.
• The Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature,
popularly known as the Palanca Awards, are a set of
literary awards for Philippine writers. Usually referred to
as the "Pulitzer Prize of the Philippines," it is the
country's highest literary honor in terms of prestige.
21st-century Filipino poets
• 1. Peter Solis Nery is a Filipino poet, fictionist,
author, and filmmaker. Writing in Hiligaynon, he is a
Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature Hall of
Fame Awardee, the Cultural Center of the Philippines
(CCP) Literary Grant, and the All-Western Visayas
Literary Contest (National Commission for Culture and
the Arts) winner. In 2015, he became the first Filipino
author to be invited to the Sharjah International Book
Fair in the United Arab Emirates.
• Writing in English, Filipino, and Hiligaynon, he has
authored at least 20 books, and has written screenplays.
He wrote and edited newspapers in Iloilo City before
becoming a nurse in the United States.
21st-century Filipino poets
• 2. Rommel N. Angara (born August 20, 1980) is a
Filipino poet and essayist. His poems saw print in
Pambata, a magazine for Filipino children; Sipag
Pinoy, a publication of the Department of Labor and
Employment (DOLE); and Liwayway, the oldest
existing Tagalog weekly magazine in the
Philippines. His essays saw print in The Modern
Teacher, a magazine for Filipino teachers.
21st-century Filipino poets
•3. Danton R. Remoto (born March 25, 1963) is a
Filipino writer, essayist, reporter, editor, columnist,
and professor. Remoto was a first prize recipient at
the ASEAN Letter-Writing Contest for Young
People. The award made Remoto a scholar at the
Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. As a
professor, Remoto teaches English and Journalism
at the Ateneo de Manila University. Remoto is the
chairman emeritus of Ang Ladlad, a lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) political party in
the Philippines.
21st-century Filipino poets
•4. Ophelia Alcantara Dimalanta (June 16, 1932
– November 4, 2010) was a Filipino poet,
editor, author, and teacher. One of the
country's most respected writers, Dimalanta
published several books of poetry, criticism,
drama, and prose and edited various literary
anthologies. In 1999, she received Southeast
Asia's highest literary honor, the S.E.A. Write
Award.
