10. Shombe Electronics Controls Ltd is a manufacturer of electronics components,
specializing in industrial control equipment. Mrs. Shombe the chief accountant of the
company inspected 300 sales invoices, to make sure that the number minor
irregularities such as wrong date, incorrect addition, not rubber-stamped, etc. lies
within company's acceptable error rate of 2%.
a) If 9 of 300 sample items contains a minor irregularity, is there statistical evidence at 5%
level of significance that the stipulated error rate has exceeded?
b) How many of the 300 sample items (i.e. 𝑥 value) described above, would need to contain
minor irregularities in order to exceed company’s stipulated error rate at 5% level of
significance?
11. Two surgical procedures are used by Ocean Road Hospital to treat cancer. To compare
success rate of two procedures, random samples of two types of surgical patients were
obtained and the number of patients who showed no recurrence of this disease after
one-year period were recorded below. Do the data provide sufficient evidence to
indicate a difference in the two procedures at 5% level of significance?
Procedure type n Number of success
Procedure A 100 78
Procedure B 100 87
12. A machine is considered unsatisfactory if it produces more than 8% defectives. A
random sample of 120 items produced by machine contains 12 defectives. Does the
sample evidence support that claim that the machine is unsatisfactory at 5% level of
significance?
13. An automatic dispenser for ice cream has been set to dispense exactly 100gm of ice
cream per serving. For a sample of 10 servings, the average amount of ice cream is
101.05gm with SD of 2.5gm. The amounts being dispensed are assumed to fallow
normal distribution. Basing the null hypothesis on the assumption that the process is in
control, should the dispenser be reset because of a test at 5% level of significance?
14. A sample of 600 people selected at random from a large city shows that 53% are
smokers. Is there any reason to reject the hypothesis that smokers and non-smokers are
equal in number in the city at 5% level of significance?
15. The mean breaking strength of cables supplied by a manufacturer is 1800 with standard
deviation of 100. By a new technique in the manufacturing process, it claimed that the
breaking strength of the cables has increased. In order to test this claim a sample of
25 cables is tested. It found that the mean breaking strength is1850. Can we support
the claim at 0.01 level of significance?
16. In a certain school, there are 6th graders and 7th graders. The average weight in a sample
of 250 students in 6th was found to be 120 lbs with standard deviation of 12 lbs while
the corresponding figures in a sample 400 students in 7th graders were 124 lbs and 14
lbs. Is the difference significant at 1% level of significant?
17. An analyst wishes to estimate the mean monthly wages of workers in a particular
company within Tshs. 2500/= and with 95% confidence. The standard deviation of the
wages rates is estimated as being Tshs. 10,000/=. What is the number of personnel
records that should be sampled as the minimum to satisfy this research objective?
18. The mean weekly sales of soap bars in departmental store was 146.3 per store. After an
advertising campaign, the mean weekly sales of 32 stores for a typical week increased
to 153.7 and showed a standard deviation of 17.2. Was the advertising campaign
successfully at 5% level of significance?
19. 19 pigs were assigned random among four experiments. Each group were assigned
different diet. The following data are pig weights after being raised on these diets. Are
the pig weights the same for all diets at 5% level of significance?

20. In checking the reliability of bank’s records, auditing firms sometimes ask a sample of
bank’s customers to confirm the accuracy of their savings account balances as reported
by the bank. Suppose an auditing firm interested in estimating P, the proportion of
bank’s savings accounts on whose balances the bank and its customers disagree. Of
200 saving accounts customers questioned by the auditors, 15 said their balance
disagree with that reported by the bank.
a) Use 95% confidence interval to estimate the actual proportion of the bank’s savings
accounts on whose balances the bank and customers disagree.
b) How many savings account customers should the auditors question if they want to estimate
P to within 0.02 with probability equal to 0.95?
