Career Roadmap: From High School to

SAPS Commander
Prepared for Aspiring Police Professionals in South Africa

This report provides a structured roadmap to help students in South Africa pursue a
career in the South African Police Service (SAPS), from high school to leadership roles
such as Captain or Commander.

Phase 1: High School Preparation


Age Range: Ages 15–18 (Grades 10–12)

 • Focus on completing your Matric (Grade 12) with good results.


 • Recommended subjects: English, Life Orientation, Math or Math Literacy, History, a
second official language.
 • Stay physically active through sports or gym.
 • Avoid criminal activity and maintain a clean record.
 • Participate in SAPS youth programs or community crime awareness activities if
available.

Phase 2: Post-Matric Options (Optional but Recommended)


Age Range: Ages 18–21

 • Option A: Apply directly to SAPS as a Police Trainee when recruitment opens.


 • Option B: Study a Diploma or Bachelor’s in Policing, Criminal Justice, or Law (e.g., at
UNISA or TUT).
 • Volunteer with community safety organizations or SAPS-related projects.
 • Apply to SAPS during or after completing your qualification.

Phase 3: SAPS Police Trainee Program


Age Range: Ages 19–22

 • Duration: 24 months.
 • 12 months of academic training at a Police Academy.
 • 12 months of practical training at a police station.
 • Receive a monthly stipend during training; full salary upon completion.

Phase 4: Constable and Promotion Pathway


Age Range: Ages 21–30

 • Start as a Constable and gain 2–5 years of experience.
