Title: "Designing a Multi-Functional Automotive Museum: Integrating Showrooms,

Event Spaces, Heritage Exhibits, and Educational Facilities to Advance the Automotive
Industry"

Chapter 1
Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The automotive industry is an important part of the Philippine economic and
cultural landscape, reflecting the country's technological accomplishments and social
progress. As a vital engine of modernization and industrialization, this industry has not
only boosted the country's economy by creating jobs and developing technology, but it has
also become an integral element of Filipino identity and daily life. Vehicles play a variety
of roles in the Philippines, including serving as essential modes of transportation for
millions of Filipinos navigating urban and rural landscapes, as symbols of status and success
reflecting personal and societal aspirations, and as objects of desire valued for their
engineering, design, and cultural significance. The importance of the automotive sector in
the Philippines is demonstrated by its numerous cultural representations, such as the
famous jeepney, which represents Filipino inventiveness and creativity. Despite its
pragmatic origins as a postwar vehicle, the jeepney has become a cultural icon, symbolizing
the country's tenacity and inventiveness. Similarly, the growing popularity of automotive
events, automobile clubs, and collector societies indicates Filipinos' deep emotional and
cultural attachment to vehicles. However, despite the Philippines' rich automotive culture,
there are few places dedicated to preserving and promoting its history and possible future.

A multi-functional automobile museum has the ability to bridge this gap by

providing a lively location that respects the industry's heritage while also aiding its future
growth. Such a museum may document the growth of the Philippine automobile industry,
from its early usage of imported vehicles to the rise of indigenous innovation evident in
products such as the jeepney, a worldwide known icon of Filipino creativity.
Simultaneously, it may serve as a showcase for cutting-edge automotive technological
advancements, in line with the country's rising emphasis on sustainability and smart
transportation. By including components such as heritage exhibitions, educational facilities,
and event spaces, the museum might become a dynamic hub for learning, inspiration, and
community building.

A venue that honors the history of the Philippine automotive industry while
simultaneously providing a forum for innovation, education, and community involvement
is becoming more and more necessary in this regard. This need can be met by a
multipurpose automotive museum that unifies many facets of the automotive industry into
a seamless, engaging space. In addition to encouraging technological breakthroughs
through interactive exhibits and showrooms showing contemporary technologies, such a

facility can respect the history of the industry by showcasing the evolution of cars and their
impact on Filipino society.

With its prime location in a big city like Metro Manila or Cebu, the museum has the
potential to become a famous attraction that draws tourists from both domestic and
foreign countries. The industry's move toward modernity and environmental concern
could be reflected in its design by using creative and sustainable architectural elements.
Through promoting an understanding of the history of the automotive industry and
stimulating innovative concepts, the museum may help preserve Philippine culture and
advance the country's economy. This study proposes a design for a multi-functional car
museum in the Philippines that combines history, innovation, and community. Such a
facility has the potential to enhance the automotive sector by raising awareness, protecting
cultural history, and encouraging innovation, all while offering an engaging and interactive
environment for the public. By highlighting both the past and future of the automobile
industry, the museum has the potential to become a landmark destination and a source of
national pride.

1.2 Conceptual Framework

Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) proposes that knowledge is formed through

the transformation of experience. Kolb (2015) contends that learning is a process that
includes real experiences, introspective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active
experimentation. A multi-functional automotive museum could use ELT to create exhibits
that encourage visitors to progress through these stages, such as allowing them to physically
interact with vehicles, reflect on their mechanics and history, conceptualize new designs,
and experiment with technology in hands-on workshops. This results in a circle of ongoing
learning and engagement. Constructivist Learning Theory holds that learners actively
construct knowledge through interaction with their surroundings, guided by social and
cultural circumstances. Vygotsky and Bruner expanded upon Piaget's concepts by
emphasizing the importance of social contact, cultural instruments, and language in the
learning process

output, and the outcomes received. This includes data analysis and the use of the mix-
method to obtain information on how the facility will function as a multi-functional facility
to benefit the automobile sector in the Philippines.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

1. How can the present lack of interactive and immersive learning possibilities in
automotive displays be addressed to improve visitor engagement and
comprehension of automotive technologies?
2. How can museums improve community learning by encouraging social contact,
cooperation, and group-based educational activities for visitors, students, and
industry professionals?
3. How can educational facilities within an automotive museum be designed to
provide practical, hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for careers
in automotive engineering, design, and sustainable technologies?

PTA as a major tourist attraction in both urban and rural parts of the Philippines.
The museum may draw both domestic and foreign visitors, especially auto
aficionados, given the growing interest in sustainable technology and automotive
culture. Through marketing initiatives, the PTA's engagement would help guarantee
that the museum's visibility is maximized, making it a major attraction in the nation's
tourism plan and promoting both domestic and foreign travel to the region.

1.5 Goals and Objectives of the Study

The project's objective was to create a multipurpose automotive museum that
would serve as a center for education and culture in the Philippines. By encouraging
technological developments and displaying the history of the Philippine automobile
industry, including classic vehicles like the Jeepney, it sought to close the gap between the
public, education, and the automotive industry. With interactive exhibits and workshops,
the museum aimed to give professionals and students an engaging learning environment.
Additionally, it sought to promote industry cooperation, showcase sustainable automobile
innovations, and aid in workforce development by offering vocational training.

1.6 Scope, delimitation, and limitations

Chapter II
2.1 Review of Related Literature and Studies
This chapter gives the researcher the idea and other connected studies that can be
applied to this research by summarizing relevant research and literature.

2. 2 Related Literature
The construction of car museums has received global attention as a platform for
education, cultural preservation, and technological improvement. These institutions serve
as hubs for the automotive industry's past, present, and future, raising awareness and
appreciation for its societal significance. In global contexts, automobile museums such as
the Henry Ford Museum in the United States and the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Germany
have proved the ability of such facilities to attract millions of visitors each year, becoming
cultural and educational icons (Smith, 2018). They present historical artifacts, cutting-edge
technologies, and sustainable advances in an interactive setting that appeals to a wide range
of audiences.
Automotive museums also serve an important role in fostering innovation and skill
development. Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory states that interactive and hands-on
learning environments promote active engagement, allowing students to obtain a deeper
understanding and practical abilities (Kolb, 2015). This is consistent with the goal of
integrating educational facilities into museums by providing seminars, training programs,
and simulations to prepare future automotive industry workers. Furthermore, studies show
that vocational training programs held in specialist institutions, such as automobile
museums, can assist close the skills gap in industries that require technical expertise (Garcia
et al., 2020).
Furthermore, car museums make a substantial contribution to tourism. According
to Santos (2021), specialized museums are becoming increasingly attractive tourist
destinations in Southeast Asia, attracting both domestic and foreign visitors. These
museums are important economic drivers, stimulating local companies and offering job
possibilities. In the Philippines, incorporating an automotive museum into the tourism
circuit can boost the country's cultural offers while also appealing to specialized audiences,
notably car enthusiasts. In the Philippine context, integrating an automotive museum into
the tourism circuit can enhance the country’s cultural offerings by showcasing the rich
history and innovations of the automotive industry. This not only appeals to niche markets,
such as automotive enthusiasts and professionals, but also provides educational and
recreational opportunities for families and general tourists, further solidifying the
museum’s role as a cultural landmark.

6
PEÑA-2024

Automotive museums are increasingly being recognized for their significance in

preserving industrial legacy and encouraging public participation in technology and history.
Globally, institutions such as the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles and the
Toyota Automobile Museum in Japan show how dynamic displays, and interactive
exhibitions can educate and inspire visitors (Johnson, 2020). They act as links between
cultural history and present innovation, allowing audiences to comprehend how
automotive improvements impact society.
Wilson and Green (2020) investigated the impact of interactive exhibits on visitor
experience and learning outcomes in automotive museums. The study found that visitors,
particularly younger audiences, showed higher levels of engagement and retention of
information when museums included hands-on, interactive displays. The research suggests
that integrating technology and interactive elements in automotive museums could enhance
both the educational and entertainment value for visitors.
2.3 Related Studies
Several studies have looked into the role of car museums in preserving heritage,
providing education, and contributing to tourism. Smith and Taylor (2018) investigated the
teaching value of interactive exhibitions in car museums. The studies demonstrated that
such exhibits considerably improve visitor engagement and knowledge retention,
particularly among younger audiences. This lends credence to the idea of incorporating
hands-on learning opportunities into museum settings to foster a better grasp of
automotive technology and history.
The study stressed that traditional static displays, while useful, frequently fail to grab
the attention of current audiences who are used to interactive and multimedia experiences.
In contrast, interactive exhibitions allowed visitors to study automobile innovations in a
more engaging and memorable way. Simulators, for example, allow users to assemble
engine components or drive electric vehicles, providing concrete insights into the
mechanics and advancements of the automobile industry.
Smith and Taylor (2018) concluded that incorporating hands-on learning
opportunities into museum settings is an effective way to create a better understanding of
automotive history and technology. This method not only improves the teaching
experience, but it also broadens museums' appeal to a wide range of people, including
students, families, and automobile enthusiasts. Museums may increase their educational
role by fostering a dynamic and engaging environment that converts passive observation
into active learning. The findings highlight the ability of interactive exhibits to bridge the
gap between past achievements and future developments in the automobile industry.
Another study conducted by Lee and Park (2019) explored the economic impact of
automotive museums on their host communities, focusing on data collected from
museums in South Korea. The research revealed that these specialized institutions play a
7
PEÑA-2024

significant role in driving local economic growth, contributing to increased revenues for
surrounding businesses and creating employment opportunities for the community. The
study highlighted how the presence of an automotive museum can act as a catalyst for
economic activity by attracting a steady stream of visitors, including both local residents
and international tourists. These visitors often contribute to the local economy by spending
on accommodations, dining, transportation, and other services in the area.
Furthermore, Lee and Park (2019) stated that car museums could increase their
economic impact by expanding their products beyond standard exhibits. Integrating event
spaces within museums for business conferences, product launches, auto shows, and other
industry-related activities has been identified as a revenue-generating technique. These
events not only attract more visitors, but they also foster connections with local businesses
and automobile manufacturers, increasing the museum's economic linkages with its host
city.
Harrison and Bell (2020) examined how automotive museums provide cultural and
educational benefits to their communities. The study found that these museums offer a
platform for public education on topics such as engineering, history, and design while also
preserving automotive culture. The authors noted that automotive museums are
particularly effective at engaging audiences by combining cultural storytelling with
technological innovation, making them valuable educational resources.
The study found that one of the primary strengths of car museums is its capacity to
captivate visitors through a combination of cultural narrative and technical innovation.
This strategy not only appeals to a diverse spectrum of visitors, including automotive
aficionados, students, and general audiences, but it also promotes deeper learning. These
museums create an immersive experience by combining the historical background of the
vehicles with the technological breakthroughs that enabled them, allowing visitors to learn
how cars have influenced both the social fabric and industrial growth over time. The
researchers concluded that automotive museums are more than just cultural landmarks;
they are also important educational institutions that help the public comprehend the
technological and cultural value of autos. They argued for the continued development of
these museums as spaces for learning, innovation, and celebrating automotive heritage,
emphasizing their relevance in conserving the automotive industry's legacy while also
inspiring future generations.
The study also looked at the possibility for collaboration programs with businesses
and educational institutions, such as internships, training workshops, and innovation
showcases. These programs have a twofold benefit: they strengthen the museum's function
as an educational hub while also encouraging workforce development and industrial
growth. According to the findings, such alliances can help car museums become vital parts
of the local economy, combining cultural preservation with economic viability.

8
PEÑA-2024

Garcia (2020) did a thorough examination of the possibilities of specialized

museums in the Philippines to boost cultural tourism. The report noted that cultural and
industry-specific museums, such as automotive museums, offer unique chances to reach
specialized populations that are sometimes missed in typical tourism tactics. These
museums, which appeal to automobile enthusiasts, historians, educators, and students, can
serve as an important platform for highlighting the Philippines' rich automotive heritage
and achievements. One significant example included in the study was the Jeepney, which
represents Filipino innovation and cultural identity. As the focal focus of an automotive
museum, the Jeepney may be shown not merely as a historical item, but also as a developing
form of mobility, signifying.
Garcia (2020) went on to describe how car museums can boost local tourism by
providing customized experiences that appeal to both domestic and international
audiences. These experiences could include interactive exhibitions, guided tours, and
immersive narrative about the Philippine car industry's growth. Such projects would help
tourists obtain a better understanding of the country's industrial legacy while also giving
chances for education and pleasure.
According to Garcia (2020), car museums could play an important role in filling
gaps in cultural tourism by diversifying the attractions offered in the Philippines. By
highlighting national successes and inventions, these museums have the potential to boost
cultural pride and raise the country's status as a specialist tourism destination. The study
concluded that with adequate planning, marketing, and collaboration, car museums have
the potential to greatly contribute to the Philippines' cultural and economic environment,
improving the tourism industry while also encouraging education and heritage
preservation.
