BioMatrix, Oxidizers Introduction

The Oxidizer BioMatrix is an Excel Workbook packed with useful information on oxidizing biocides commonly used in recirculating cooling
waters. It is the collaborative effort of the BioMatrix Task Force of the Cooling Water Subcommittee.

The biocides included in the Oxidizer BioMatrix have both primary registration and have recirculating cooling water application information on
their label. Biocides for formulation use only or manufacturing use only are not included. Neither are subregistered biocides.

The BioMatrix workbook contains tabs, each representing a table. The tables are ready to print – no need to highlight the printing area. The
first 3 tabs represent tables containing structure, mode of action and deactivation information. The next 12 tabs represent tables which
include information specific to biocide products. The biocide products are grouped by chemical composition and activity. For a given
composition and activity, the products are listed alphabetically. For each biocide product, the following information is covered in its table:
common name(s), trade name and manufacturer/supplier, CAS number, EPA registration number, PC Code, chemical composition and
activity, the label dose rate, and the label date. Additional information has been inserted where appropriate for the molecule.

The BioMatrix is a living document that will be updated periodically to reflect new information on biocide application and to reflect the advent
of new biocides and/or the demise of existing biocides.

MODE OF ACTION OF OXIDIZING BIOCIDES

The active biocidal agent is HOCl for all available chlorine donors, including elemental chlorine, and sodium, calcium,
or lithium hypochlorite, the chlorinated isocyanurates, the chlorinated hydantions, and some other chlorinated amines.
All of these available chlorine donors product hypochlorous acid (HOCl) by hydrolysis of water. Since HOCl is a small
neutral molecule, it can readily diffuse thorugh the cell walls of microorganisms. Other available chlorine species
including hypochlorite ion (OCl-), which are either ionic or larger molecules, can only attack the outside surface
of the cell. Since HOCl is the same active species for all of these materials, the mode of action of HOCl applies to all
of the available chlorine donors.

The effects of chlorine on exposed bacteria, viruses, algae, and other microorganisms include disruption of critical enzymatic
pathways leading to lack of reproduction at lower doses and death at higher doses. Based on the chemical reactivity
of HOCl, the predominant reaction is oxidation of the thiol (-SH, sulfhydryl) and sulfide (C-S-C) groups in enzymes to
disulfides, sulfoxides, or disulfoxides, thereby destroying the cellular activity of proteins. HOCl can also have
deleterious effects on DNA or RNA that involve the formation of chlorinated derivatives of nucleotide bases or
interference with DNA and RNA sysnthesis.

During treatment with HOCl, bacterial spores lose refractivity, the spore coat separates from the cortex, and lyis
occurs. In addition, HOCl-treated spores exhibit increased permeability of the spore coat. Virus inactivation by HOCl
precedes any severe morphological changes, but then virus RNA is degraded into fragments and the virus capsid
is broken down. Thus, for viruses, HOCl appears to react with the proteins and enzymes as well as the viral RNA.

The active biocidal agent for all the available bromine donors in HOBr. The mode of action is similar to that of HOCl.

Monochloramine (NH2Cl) and monobromamine (NH2Br) can also diffuse readily into cells, since they are neutral
molecules and then chlorinate or brominate easily reduced thiol or sulfide groups. Monochloramine or
monobromamine can be formed by reaction of ammonia or an ammonium salte with the proper amount of any of the
available chlorine or bromine donors, respectively.

Deactivation of residuals of halogen-based oxidizing biocides:

Dehalogenating agents can be used. Examples of dehalogenating agents are sodium sulfite (Na 2SO3), sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3), sodium metabisulfite
(Na2S2O5), and sodium bisulfite (NaHSO3). The theoretical dosage (ppm per ppm chlorine) varies depending on the dehalogenating agent. The dosage of
sodium thiosulfate is also dependant on the pH of the system. Table below contains some dosage information. Details of the theoretical dosages are in the
September 1995 issue of Public Works by Chris Lind.

Theoretical Dosage (ppm per ppm Cl2)

Chemical Formula pH 4.0 pH 6.5 pH 9.0 pH 11.0
Sodium sulfite Na2SO3 1.96 1.96 1.96 1.96
Sodium thiosulfate Na2S2O3 2.67 2.23 1.60 1.00
Sodium metabisulfite Na2S2O5 1.47 1.47 1.47 1.47
Sodium bisulfite NaHSO3* 1.61 1.61 1.61 1.61

Deactivation of Hydrogen Peroxide:

For continuous waste treatment, the waste peroxide stream may be passed through an open pit or tank containing scrap metal (iron, copper, brass, etc.) which
can reduce the H2O2 concentration to an acceptable level before disposal. For batch treatment, H 2O2 can be diluted to 5-10% and a reducing agents, such as
sodium bisulfite solution, added to destroy the peroxide. One pound (0.454 kg) of H 2O2 (100%) will be destroyed by approximately 1.9 lb (0.862 kg) of SO 3 or
its equivalent as bisulfite. (Reference: E.I du Pont de Nemours & Co. (Inc.) 5/89 literature on storage and handling of Hydrogen Peroxide).

Predicting the Rate of Commercial Bleach Degradation

Bleach 20011, a software program that accurately (within 10% over a broad range of initial FAC
concentrations and temperatures) predicts the rate of commercial bleach degradation to chlorate is
available from the Water Research Foundation. This program was compiled after detailed laboratory
studies were used to confirm the model developed by Gordon et al.2 For those interested in obtaining
detailed information regarding bleach degradation rates and the factors that impact bleach degradation,
this program should be acquired.

Due to numerous customer inquiries, MIOX developed a Bleach Degradation Calculator (Calculator). The
calculator at this website is an approximation of the Bleach 2001 model and is offered to customers as a
tool for approximating commercial bleach degradation rates in the pH 11-14 range. It should NOT be
used to predict degradation rates for on-site generated hypochlorite solutions due to their lower initial
FAC concentration and lower pH. If OSG solutions are used within 48 hours, the rates of degradation are
typically not of concern.

The Calculator predictions and the Bleach 2001 Model predictions are in close agreement at initial FAC
concentrations ≥6.5 Trade % and storage temperatures ≥59° F (15° C). It is important to note that the
Calculator underestimates the rate of FAC degradation at both lower initial FAC concentrations and lower
storage temperatures compared to Bleach 2001.
NOTE: CALCULATOR AT THE ACTUAL WEBSITE WORKS FOR CALCULATIONS!!!

Notes to Calculator:
MIOX Corporation DOES NOT offer this Calculator as a process guarantee in design and construct of your application.
MIOX Corporation only offers this Calculator as a method to approximate bulk bleach degradation of the FAC concentration only over practical
ranges of storage temperature and initial FAC concentrations. The Calculator is not accurate for predicting the degradation rate of MIOX’s
onsite generation products.
FAC degradation of bulk bleaches under conditions outside the stated applicability ranges of the Calculator (initial FAC concentrations ≥6.5 Trade %
and storage temperatures ≥59° F (15° C)) and evaluation of the formation of chlorate in the bulk bleaches should be completed using the
Bleach 2001 program.
