The Sculptures of Rizal
Rizal’s artistic sculptures include "Prometheus Bound," which was inspired by
the Greek tragedy of Prometheus, "Mother's Revenge," which depicts a mother dog
slaying a crocodile that had eaten her pup, "The Triumph of Death Over Life," which
features a woman being held by Death, "The Triumph of Science Over Death," which
features a woman holding a torch and standing atop a skull, and more.
The self-portrait of 18-year-old Rizal, which was only recently found, is a
contentious work. The carving, which was made of baticuling wood, sparked rumors
that Rizal may not have been the artist. Experts ultimately agreed that it was Rizal's
creation, nevertheless, after doing extensive research. He also turned to art while in
exile in Dapitan. Using clay, plaster of Paris, and carving wood, he produced about 30
sculptures and carvings.
Sa Aking Mga Kabata
