The difference between Indonesia and South Korea culture

Culture is like a soul of a country. All countries have their own unique cultures to live in,

which means that people who have grown up in different places will have differentways of

behaving, different ways of thinking about things and different ways of expressing themselves.

That culture is a complete pattertn of human and the products it produces that carry

thought patterns, oral patterns, action patterns, and artifacts, and are highly dependent on abilities

someone to learn, to convey knowledge to the next generation through a variety of tools,

laguages, and reasoning pattern. Both definitions state culture is a complete unity thoroughly,

that culture has various aspects and manifestations, as well as that culture understood through a

learning proccess.

Each country has its own culture, and there are many differences between different

countries in culture. South Korea is a country that has successfully sold its culture out. So that

Indonesian society itself is starting to be interested in South Korean culture, but Indonesia has a

more diverse culture. With the diversity of cultures in Indonesia, so that Indonesian people have

high tolerance, mutual respect.

South Korea is a country that is close to Indonesian people. Starting from kpop music,

Korean dramas, and even beuty products in this ginseng country that make people feel like a part

of it. There are so many kpop fans in Indonesia, in fact, many Indonesians are willing to wait

their favorite Korean drama broadcast. There are also many Indonesians who follow trends in

South Korea drom makeup to fashion. The culture of different countries is not a barrier for

Indonesians to like South Korea.

Indonesia has many tribes and languages in each region, while in South Korea it only has

one language. Indonesia is very rich, including its ethicity and language. In fact, each region has

its own local language which is used to communicate. However, the national language is still

Indonesian. In South Korea they only have one language, they do not have a regional language.

South Korean people communicate with the same language.

The most visible cultural difference between Indonesia and South Korean is ethics.

Indonesian people are known for being friendly, Indonesian people smile easily even though they

don’t know, while in South Korea they won’t say hello or smile if they don’t know.

Indonesian hospitality can also be seen in the way people treat friends or neighbors who

are not one of our relatives. In Indonesia, invitations to friends or neighbors to come to their

house are very common and even invite them to stay overnight. This only applies to the same-

sex. Whereas in South Korea, inviting friends to play or stay at their homes is very rarely done

becouse of privacy, even for visiting their usually prefer to meet at cafes of restaurants.

In terms of religion, every Indonesian citizen is obliged to have religion. Regardless of

whether the religion is Islam, Christian, Hindu or Buddhist. With the majority of the population

being muslim in Indonesia, it is familiar to the sound of the call to prayer being echoed. In

contrast to South Korea, Muslims are a minority group, so they rarely hear the call to prayer at

any time. When korean people come to Indonesia they are often surprised to hear the call to

prayer. South Korea is liberated in terms of religion and the majority of the population has no

religion. Because the lack of knowledge about religion, the level of depression that leads to

suicide is quite large in South Korea, so there are a lot of suicides.

The culture of drunk in South Korea is so common that even drinking beer considered to

be relationship. This is very different from Indonesia, in Indonesia getting drunk is considered

wrong and even the sale of bear is very rare in Indonesia. Ethic in eating in South Korea is also

different from Indonesia although similar, in Indonesia eating is not allowed to make a sound, in

South Korea eating and drinking should be slightly turned away to look polite.

Usually in Indonesia, if you eat instant noodles, you have to be in a bowl, but different in

South Korea, you don’t need to use a bowl to enjoy instant noodles. Local people usually eat it

direcly in the pan to keep the temperature hot. Indonesian culture, don’t eat if you don’t eat rice.

This also applied to South Korea. But what distinguishes is that the same restaurant is different

from the place,so the culture is different. If restaurants in South Korea only sell fried chiken, in

Indonesia fried chicken is complete with rice.

In South Korea really value time, the people there always arrive on time even before the

event starts, must not overtake the line because it will receive cynical stares and protests from

them, discipline is one of the habits of the people there. While in Indonesia being late to an event

is concidered normal, even Indonesians often procrastinate.

In Indonesia there are many motorbikes and cars, while in South Korea there are more

people on foot and public transportations. Roads in big cities in Indonesia are very congested,

and even traffic jams often occur. Because most road users are motorbikes and cars. The number

of road users who are motorizes drivers means that in Indonesia there is very little road space for

pedestrians. Whereas in South Korea, pedestrians are given space to walk without being

distrubed or distrubing other motorists and in South Korea, many of the residents walk and use

public transportation such as the subway, and riding a motorbike is considered dangerous.
South Korean beauty standards are different from Indonesia even though they are similar,

but in Indonesia to carry out plastic surgery is considered strange and even rarely does plastic

surgery. Whereas in South Korea plastic surgery is a very common thing, so don’t be surprised if

the practice of plastic surgery is very easy to find.

Culture in relationship is also different. Relationship celebration, dating couples often

calculate the age of their relationship, usually it will be celebrated every month or once a year,

but some don’t really care about the age of their relationship. In South Korea they usually count

the age of their relationship every day, even their relationship is not only celebrate every month,

but when their relationship has entered the age of 100 days, 200 days, etc. They always clebrate

it, including on anniversaries. This is a little different from dating style in Indonesia which

usually only celebrates every month or once a year on anniversaries.

On valentine’s day, in South Korea it is usually only women who give gifts or chocolates

to their men. On the other hand, on white day, usually only men give gifts or chocolates to

women. This is different from Indonesia, where on valentine’s, couples who are dating exhange

gifts or chocolates. In addition, in South Korea every 11 November they celebrate pepero day. At

this celebration, couples who are dating exchange pepero.

When in comes to dating, both in Indonesia and in South Korea, its generally the men

who pay. However, currently in South Korea there is a change in that they do ducth pay or they

each pay their bills when dating. In Indonedia, perhaps there are still many who think that when

they go on a date, they are considered not gentlemanly. Therefore, until now there are still many

men who take the initiative to pay bills when dating.

Couples in South Korea usually have a lot of couple items, it’s not uncommon for them

to have same items from well-known brands such as Adidas, which of course don’t come cheap.

Meanwhile in Indonesia, a couple who owns couple’s items is quite rare. Sometimes men feel

embarrassed when they have to wear clothes that are couple with their partners.

South Korea has a culture of delaying marriage, and it is normal for them to marry

between the ages of 30 and 40. This is very different from Indonesia where currently, many

couples decide to get married at a young age. Not only that, in South Korea, people who are

dating do not necessarily have the desire to get married because most couples who are dating in

South Korea do not care about marriage. This is also very different from in Indonesia, espesially

adult couples who are serious in relationship and have thoughts of dating until they are brought

up to the level of marriage.

South Korean people who come to Indonesia often feel unconfortable with the toilet.

They rarely find toilet paper, and they are confused about how to clean up after going to the

bathroom. In Indonesia, people are used to cleaning with water. South Korean people who go to

Indonesia have to carry tissue everywhere.

And it is mostly the culture known to Indonesians and South Korean people themselves.

Most people will experience culure shock when they come to another country, because there are

so many different culture from their own country. Then we must study other cultures and we

must respect the culture itself, knowing the culture of other countries before coming to their

country will make it easier for us to communicate with people around.
