Gangam Style Root Method

The Gangnam Style Root Method is a fun and easy approach to finding the roots of quadratic equations using a dance metaphor. By identifying a pivot and galloping left and right, users can determine the roots without memorizing complex formulas. This method is particularly useful for solving simple quadratic equations in educational settings.

The Gangnam Style Root Method: The Funniest Way to Find

Roots of Quadratic Equations

1 Introduction
The Gangnam Style Root Method is a super easy, hilarious way to find the roots of a quadratic equation
ax2 + bx + c = 0. It’s like dancing Gangnam Style: find the center of your dance floor (the pivot), gallop
left and right, and boom—your roots are there!

2 Why Gangnam Style?

It’s called Gangnam Style because:
• The pivot (p = − 2a
b
) is your dance floor, like Psy’s stage.
• You gallop distance d left and right to find the roots, like Psy’s horse-riding dance.

• It’s so catchy and fun, you’ll solve quadratics while humming “Oppa Gangnam Style!”

3 Method
For a quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0:
1. Find Sum and Product:

• Sum of roots: − ab .
c
• Product of roots: a.

2. Choose Dance Floor (Pivot): The pivot is:

b
p=−
2a

3. Gallop to Roots (Distance): Let roots be r1 = p + d, r2 = p − d. Use the product:

c
r1 · r2 = (p + d)(p − d) = p2 − d2 =
a
So: √
c c
d =p − ,
2 2
d = p2 −
a a

4. Get Roots: Roots are:

r1 = p + d, r2 = p − d

1
4 Example
Solve x2 − 6x + 8 = 0.
1. Sum: − ab = − −6
1 = 6. Product:
c
a = 8
1 = 8.
−6
2. Pivot: p = − 2a
b
= − 2·1 = 3.

3. Distance: d2 = p2 − c
a = 32 − 8 = 9 − 8 = 1. So, d = 1 = 1.
4. Roots: r1 = 3 + 1 = 4, r2 = 3 − 1 = 2.
Roots are x = 4, 2. Check: (x − 4)(x − 2) = x2 − 6x + 8. Oppa Gangnam Style!

5 Why It’s Awesome

• No messy quadratic formula to memorize.
• Visualize the pivot as your dance floor, roots as your dance moves.
• Perfect for JEE Mains quadratics with simple numbers.

6 Your Dance Challenge

Try it on:
• x2 − 4x + 3 = 0
• 2x2 + 4x + 2 = 0
