Introduction

“A brilliant idea may change the world — but only if you protect it before the world tries

to take it.” The article by Richard D. Harroch emphasizes the need to safeguard intellectual

property (IP). We, as soon to be business leaders, will face betrayal and learn to reclaim what

was ours. The article “10 Intellectual Property Strategies for Technology Startups” tells us that

even a single message can be a threat only if without proper protection. In today’s digital world,

our role is to create and establish our ideas, not just products, but also consider them as our assets

that can benefit us in the long run. This reaction paper explores how IP is not just a legal matter

but rather a strategy for any entrepreneur who envisions themselves as a visionary one.

Thesis Statement

The article shows that for any businessman, success is not entirely dependent on having

great ideas, but creating a layer of early protection for better detection of possible problems later

on. Interestingly, many successful entrepreneurs who faced setbacks and earned to defend what

they created, are the stepping stone to long-term success and treating IP as a foundation.

Body

As students prepare to enter the business world, understanding Intellectual

Property is essential. Apart from the fact that it teaches us to protect the creative ideas we have

in mind, it also shifts our direction towards protecting our career-defining business. Having a

thorough grasp of the concepts serves as a lesson to become cautious of what we put online, as

information must always be confidential to avoid unnecessary problems in protecting data

privacy. One mistake can cause us or the company a downfall by just a single mistake of doing
something not cautious of us. As a matter of fact, in our ever-changing society, one click can

create a mistake, which can lead to multiple errors. However, with the help of understanding IP,

it helps us to think critically and master the basics such as patents, copyrights, trademarks, etc.

These can be the foundational knowledge that we should know as it becomes our external

protection on our invention’s privacy. With this, understanding IP is a reminder that we should

become extra cautious on what we share online as everything can make or break us. It is always

up to our hands to become self-aware to protect ourselves in the growing technological

advancements happening today.

As future business leaders, creating a unique and marketable business name is

important in the industry. As mentioned in the article, it clearly defines the importance of

registering trademarks for names, logos, and other brand elements to boost the credibility and

trust of protecting IP. This has taught me that patents, copyrights, trademarks etc are some of the

legal tools we can use for long-term business success. With this, we feel more prepared to

approach branding with a mindset that combines creativity and legal protection. Integrating

trademark protection into a business plan is no longer optional — it is a part of building a brand

people can recognize, trust, and stay loyal to in the long run.

As an aspiring business managers, understanding that every success is not built on

ideas alone is dependent on defining ownership, roles, and responsibilities from the day the

business kicks off the market and hits the shelves. As a young aspiring business owner, given

our background in business, we are already taught in school through group projects or startup

ideas with classmates. During our meetings, we often rely on verbal agreements; However, the
article taught me that the importance of IP requires a formal agreement. For example, the article

suggests that everyone working on an idea should clearly agree on who owns what, so there

would not be any problems on the project’s succession. Without this, a groupmate could legally

walk away with the idea. As a future entrepreneur, we need to treat small projects like a real

business. A takeaway from this is learning to set boundaries and protect our contributed ideas

that could eventually help us venture out in the future.

Conclusion

In the end, the article reminds us that having great ideas is brilliant. However, the real

challenge lies in protecting these ideas. As future business leaders, we must understand that

intellectual property is not just a legal concern but a smart business strategy. From trademarks to

clear ownership agreements, these tools help turn ideas into lasting success. Through this article,

we have learned that whether we are working on a class project or starting a real business, we

should treat every idea like an asset worth protecting. Lastly, we would like to recommend that

we, all of us, should take time to comprehend and study what IP is all about because small

problems can save us from bigger problems in the future. Knowing how to protect and what we

create is not an option, it is essential.
