A Time of Growth
and Change
Between the ages of ten
to fourteen, children begin
to go through puberty.
Puberty marks the beginning
of adolescence and is the
period of time when males
and females become
physically able to develop
such as growing of body
hair, development of the
breasts in females and
muscles in males.
Puberty is a result of the
release of hormones.
Hormones play important
roles in development.
Hormones are chemical
substances that are released
into the bloodstream and
travel to other organs and
tissues, where they stimulate
growth. The male hormone
testosterone and the female
hormones, estrogen and
progesterone, are
responsible for the physical
and emotional changes that
take place during puberty.
“Have you ever wondered (Students answer may vary)
what makes you different
from your friends,
classmates, or from other
people?
