Year 4 Science: Understanding Light

The document discusses sources of light, including natural and artificial types, and explains how light travels in straight lines and how we perceive objects through reflected light. It highlights the factors affecting brightness and reflection, such as the material of objects, and includes practical activities for measuring brightness and understanding light reflection. Additionally, it addresses how certain animals' eyes reflect light and the use of reflectors for safety on roads.

Sources of light

Natural light source Artificial (Man made) light source

Sun Fire
stars Lamp
Candle

 In a flash light

The energy transfer from the battery to lamp to the

surrounding as ………………….

Brighter and dimmer

 How does distance affect the brightness of light

source?
 The further the light is from the source the bigger circle
cast.
 Some light sources are dimmer than the others. We can
measure brightness with light meter .

How light travels

 A beam of light travels outwards from a light source

 Beam is a lots of light rays
 Light travel in straight line
 An arrow shows the direction of travelling light .

How we can see
 Light falls on an object
 Object reflects light to our eyes.

 The amount of reflected light depend on:

materials of an object

 Smooth and shiny objects (mirror)

Reflect more light
 Dull and dark objects reflect less amount of light as wood .

 We need light to see , without light we can’t see.

NOTE :

The objects that reflect more light appears shiny and brighter

Moon reflects the light of the sun .

3
 some animals like cat its eyes glow at night because its eyes
reflect the light .
 Its eyes not a light source
 To make the road safe :
Road workers put cat eyes reflectors on the road to help
drivers to see at foggy night or small light source powered
by sun
