Manufacturing Processes (MET 201) : B.Tech. (3 Sem) Autumn 2021 Department of Mechanical Engineering NIT Srinagar

The document outlines the manufacturing processes taught in the MET 201 course at NIT Srinagar, including casting, machining, forming, welding, and rapid prototyping. It provides examples of problems related to machining time and material removal rate (MRR) calculations for turning operations. The document serves as a guide for students to understand the fundamentals of manufacturing processes and their applications.

Manufacturing
• Manufacturing is a process of converting raw material of low utility into a finished
product.

Classification
• Casting process – Melting and solidification. (Sand mould C, Die C, Centrifugal
C, Investment C)
• Machining process- Removal of excess material (Turning, Milling, Drilling,
Boring, Shaping, Planning, Gear cutting etc)
• Forming process- Plastic deformation (Forging, Drawing, Deep drawing, Rolling,
Bending, Extrusion)
• Welding process- Heat and/or pressure (Gas, Arc, high energy beam welding, solid
state welding)
• Rapid Prototyping- layer by layer (SLS, FDM, LOM)
Cutting Speed

Problem: A mild steel rod having 50 mm diameter and 500 mm length is to be
turned on lathe. Determine the machining time to reduce the rod to 45 mm in
one pass. Cutting speed is 30 m/min and feed is 0.7 mm/rev. Take overtravel and
tool approach equal to 5 mm.

MRR
• MRR = A x V = uncut chip thickness x width of cut
• MRR = t x b x V
• From metal cutting mechanics

• In orthogonal cutting t x b = f x d
• For orthogonal cutting: MRR = f x d x V
