Sorry, Sheep
By Guy Belleranti

Annie couldn’t sleep.

A herd of sheep entered her
room. “We’ll help you sleep!” they
baa-ed. “Count while we jump.”
CLOMP! “One.”
CLOMP! “Two.”
CLOMP! “Three.”
CLOMP—
“Stop!” Annie cried. “Sorry, sheep. You’re super jumpers, but you’re
shaking my bed and hurting my head.”
“Oh dear,” said the sheep. “Count while we dance.”
TAP-TAP. “One.”
TAP-TAP. “Two.”
TAP-TAP—
“Stop!” Annie cried. “Sorry, sheep. You’re super dancers, but I
can’t sleep to TAP-TAPs.”
“Oh dear,” said the sheep. “We’ll weave you a warm blanket of
wool.”
Annie shook her head. “Sorry, sheep. I’m sure you’re super
weavers, but that will take too long.”
“Oh, dear,” said the sheep. They talked among themselves. Then
they made a quiet circle around Annie and sang softly and beautifully:
“Annie had some singing sheep, singing sheep, singing sheep.
Annie had some singing sheep. They all sang her to sleep.”
Annie smiled. She closed her eyes. And then… she slept.

The Flying
Fox
By Guy Belleranti

Do foxes fly? No, but a bat called the

flying fox does! This bat gets its name from its pointy,
foxlike face.
Flying foxes are the world’s largest bats. With their wings open, some are
5 feet wide. That’s as long as 5 rulers laid end to end!
Flying foxes live in parts of Asia,
Africa, and Australia. They gather in
groups called colonies. Some colonies
have thousands of members.
During the day, these bats rest
hanging upside down in the trees. This
is called roosting.
At night, it’s time to eat. They search
for flower nectar and fruit. Their big eyes and great sense of smell help
them do this.
Flying foxes fly from plant to plant as they eat. This helps the forest. The
bat’s fur picks up a dust called pollen
from flowers. It carries the pollen to
other flowers, pollinating them. This
helps plants make seeds. The bats also
spread fruit seeds through the forest
as they eat and fly. The seeds grow into
new plants.

Tyrannosaurus
Rex
By Guy Belleranti

ne of the most dangerous dinosaurs was the Tyrannosaurus rex.

O It looked like a huge lizard with sharp teeth. It lived over
60 million years ago.
From nose to tail, T. rex was as long as a school bus. It was taller
than a house. It weighed more than an airplane. T. rex’s head was as
long as a kitchen table.
T. rex was one of the biggest meat-eating dinosaurs. It could eat
hundreds of pounds of meat in one bite. Animals that eat meat have
sharp teeth. T. rex had 60 of them! Some of the teeth were as big as
bananas. When T. rex lost a tooth, it grew a new one.
T. rex stood on two powerful legs. It also had two small arms. Its
strong tail helped keep it from falling over.
It might be fun to see a live Tyrannosaurus rex, but I wouldn’t want
to meet one. Would you?

Three Bears
By Erin Ryan

Did you know that there are eight different

kinds of bears found around the world? Three very different ones are
polar bears, grizzly bears and Giant Pandas.

Polar bears live in the Arctic Circle, near the North Pole. Polar
bears stay warm in very cold temperatures because they have a
layer of fat, called blubber, and because they are covered in two
layers of fur. Polar bears are excellent swimmers
and have short claws to help them walk across
ice and snow. Polar bears mostly eat seals, but
they will eat other arctic animals as well.

Grizzly bears can be found in Asia, Europe,

and North America. Grizzly bears like to eat
plants, mammals and fish. They can run
over thirty miles per hour. Even though
grizzly bears are very big and strong, their
cubs only weigh one pound when they are born.

The Giant Panda lives in China and has

black and white fur. This bear eats up to
thirty pounds of bamboo every day. The
Giant Panda is an endangered animal
because many of the forests where they
live have been destroyed. Many people
work hard to protect Giant Pandas.
