Important Topics/Questions ( based on PYQ Analysis)
Sem 2 Intermediate MME 2025
(BA Hons Economics)
Note : This is not an exhaustive list, however these are the topics that you must
know. So in case you are just starting out with your prep, you can focus on these
topics rst, and then move to the rest of the topics.
Suggested Weightage for each unit in the nal examination
Unit 1 : Linear Algebra : 45% (Ch-12, 13, 14)
Unit 2 & 3 : Calculus : 55% ( Ch-15,16,17)
1. For 2025, the structure of the nal term examination paper will be simpli ed (by
removing the sections that were followed earlier), and, from now on, there will
be a total of 10 questions, out of which students are supposed to answer any 9.
2. The examination paper will feature questions of diverse complexity levels, from
simple to advanced. Each question may preferably have up to two parts.
Unit 1 Ch 12, 13, 14 : Linear Algebra
1. When is a set of linearly independent vectors called linearly independent or
dependent. Finding or proving if a set of vectors in linearly independent or
dependent.
2. Check whether the vectors are orthogonal or not and using this concept for
nding other things in between.
3. Setting up the Leontief system from a word problem and solving it.
4. Finding what will be the system of equations give you ( no solution, unique
solution, and in nite solutions) for di erent values of the unknown in the
system of equations
5. Finding the rank of a matrix
6. Di erent rules for nding the determinants, these can be asked directly in a
problem or can be used in between as well in some problem.
7. Understand the logic of all the important de nitions in matrix, like
symmetric, skew symmetric, orthogonal, upper triangular matrix, lower

triangular matrix, singular matrix, non singular matrix, etc, there can be
some small proof based questions based on these concepts.
8. Finding the equations of a line and plane , under various conditions, like
when 2 passing points are given, or when one passing point and direction
vector is given.
9. Finding the eigenvalues and eigenvectors, checking whether the matrix is
diagonalizable or not.
Unit 2 Ch 15, 16 : Functions of Several Real Variables
1. Finding the domain and plotting it in 2-d diagrams.
2. Finding the level curves and plotting those in diagrams.
3. Verifying young’s theorem.
4. Checking the de niteness, positive, negative, semi-de nite, inde nite, etc.
they can ask you to verify this either directly looking at the function
( sometimes they speci cally ask you to do this. ). sometimes you have to
use the determinant method for the same.
5. Finding the equation of a tangent using the concept of gradient, and when
a passing point is given.
6. Finding derivative /partial derivatives using chain rule and interpreting it in
economics or checking the sign of the overall term
7. Do the discriminating monopolist and discriminating monopsonist, and see
what will happen if this discrimination is not allowed. Use the examples and
the exercise problem given in the book.
8. Finding IRS, CRS, DRS, and checking the degree of homogeneity.
9. Finding the directional derivatives. In which direction is the increase in
function value is the highest and the decrease is the fastest and what are
the magnitude of these rate of changes.
10. Finding the elasticity of substitution.

11. Checking the homogeneity of functions, whether sum, product, division,
subtractions etc of homogeneous functions will be homogeneous or not.
12. Checking whether the function is homothetic or not.
13. Using the concept of di erentials to nd the approximate changes in
variables or function values.
14. Solving the system of equation and using that to nd the partial derivatives.
( reference section 16.9, system of equations )
Unit 3 Ch 17 : Multivariate Optimization
1. Word problem is given, converting it into an optimization problem and
nding the optimal values.
2. Finding whether a particular set is convex or not, using diagrams.
( checking that if we pick 2 points and join the line joining those 2 points,
whether it lies entirely in the set or not.)
3. Finding the critical points/ stationary points and classifying them as local
max, local min or saddle point.
4. Using the extreme value theorem ( closed and bounded domain ) to show
that global maximum and global minimum exists.
5. Checking whether the function given is concave or convex.
6. Checking whether the function is quasi concave or quasi convex ( using the
concept of diagram, Upper level set/ lower level set ) and also using the
su cient conditions/necessary conditions. Sometimes, the function will be
convex and concave and which will directly imply this being quasi concave
and quasi convex respectively. It will be good if you see many examples for
this, since it is sometimes di cult to come up with what approach to follow
on the spot.
7. For Cobb Douglas function, understand all the cases, where it is convex,
concave etc.( reference, book page , 664)

8. Do the useful conditions to check convexity and concavity. They can help
us in guring out when is a function or its combination concave or convex.
