Wind Energy Final Exam Spring 2023

The document is a final exam for the Wind Energy course at Ain Shams University, consisting of four questions related to wind turbine power calculations. Each question has specific parameters and requires the application of principles such as blade element theory and aerodynamic coefficients. The exam is designed to assess students' understanding of wind energy mechanics within a two-hour timeframe.

Air density equals 1.25 (kg/m3) for all problems

Question (1) 5 marks

The compound VAWT has two half cylinders Savonius blades and four
Darrieus airfoils mounted as shown in the figure. The turbine angular
speed =2 rps. The coefficients of the Savonius blades are CD1= 1.1
and CD2= 2.4, while the tangential and normal coefficients Ct and Cn
for the airfoils are function of the angle of attack  as shown in the
table. The radius of the half cylinder is r =1m while that of the circle is
R=4m. The chord of the airfoil is l =2m and its height is H=12m.
Calculate the power generated from the Savonius turbine and that
generated from blade II only of the Darrieus turbine at the moment
shown in the figure, if the wind coming in the direction as shown at a
velocity V=12 m/s.

Question (2) 10 marks
A horizontal axis wind turbine has three blades. The hub diameter is
0.5 m, while the rotor diameter is 16.5 m. If the blade is designed so
that it is assumed to be composed of four equal radial-width segments,
each has a mean chord “ ” and mean setting angle “ “as shown in
the following figure. The turbine is running at a rotational speed
N=100 RPM and the average wind speed across the turbine is 10 m/s.
Use the blade element theory to calculate the obtained power from this
turbine.

Question (3) 13 marks

Making only four blade segments, calculate the instantaneous power
generated by the truncated cone Darriews wind turbine at the shown
moment, when running at a rotational speed N= 60 RPM, and the wind
velocity is V= 8 m/s from north to south. The blade chord length is 10
cm and the turbine height is 2 m. The airfoil is NACA 0012, and the
variations of Cn and Ct with the angle of attack  are shown in the
following table, where  is in degrees.

Question (4) 12 marks

The following figure shows a bomb, which is designed as a

symmetrical airfoil blade (NASA 0012) of chord length (l) is 1 m and
aspect ratio (B) is 6. The bomb is attached by a rope to a Drone. The
system (Drone & bomb) is flying horizontally in air at a speed Vsystem
= 18 m/s. The wind velocity; Vwind =10 m/s in the same direction as
that of system. It was noticed that the bomb alone has also additional
upward speed component; U = 6 m/s. The angle of attack of the wind
relative velocity with the chord of the airfoil bomb is 30o at which the
lift and drag coefficients are CL = 0.75 and CD= 0.08, respectively.
Draw the airfoil showing the velocity triangle. Calculate the weight of
the bomb. What is the tension in the rope?
