Interactions among living things and nonliving things in tropical rainforests, coral
reefs and mangrove swamps
The Ecosystem is a community made up of living things (biotic) and nonliving things (abiotic ) ,in their
natural environment.
Living things – don’t grow , don’t need food and don’t reproduce.Example plants ,animals bacteria and
fungi.
Nonliving things -grow ,change ,produce waste ,reproduce and die .Example water ,rock ,soil, air ,rain
sunlight temperature.
SYMBIOSIS -The word symbiosis comes from Greek origin meaning “together” and “living” and describes a
close interaction or relationship between two different species.
4 types of symbioses
Commensalism – where one species benefits while the other is unaffected.
Mutualism – both species benefit.
Parasitism – one species benefits while one is harmed.
Competition – neither benefits.
Predation – one species benefits while the other dies
Different ecosystem
Tropical rainforests -also known for their ability to support a large number of plant and animal species. They
are very dense ,warm and wet forest located in the band of equator .
Rainforest has different layers namely emergent, canopy, understory .
Emergent refers to trees that are 130 to 180 feet tall. Canopy, on the other hand, has tall slender trees
from a dense platform of vegetation with 60 to 129 feet of the ground. The understory is about 59 feet
and below and consists of trunks of canopy, shrubs, trees and small plants. The forest floor is home to
animals like jaguars, tigers and cassowaries which thrive in a deep shade part of the forest where plant life
is thin.
Living things that can be found here composed of plants and animals. Non-living things include soil, air,
humidity, water and sunlight.
Coral reef- is an underwater ecosystem .Serve as habitat and a breeding ground of marine life.Living things
that can be found here include corals, fish, algae, and other marine life, while non-living things include
water, sunlight, rocks, and minerals.
Mangrove forests, also called mangrove swamps, mangrove thickets or mangals, are productive wetlands
that occur in coastal intertidal zones . Mangrove swamps have tangled roots that are often expose above
water and also it adapted to filter salt water .
Living things (biotic) that can be found here include mangroves themselves, various plants, animals like
crabs, shrimps, fish, birds, and microorganisms, while non-living things (abiotic) encompass water, mud,
sunlight, nutrients, and air.
