Crop Rotation
• Repeated cultivation of crops or
crops and fallow in a certain
sequence on the same land is
called, crop rotation.
• Example: Rice-Wheat-Mung
• It is the reverse of land rotation.
• Here crop is rotated year after
year.
3
Definition Of Crop Rotation
• It refers to recurrent succession of crops on
the same piece of land either in a year or
over a longer period of time.
• It is a process of growing different crops in
succession on a piece of land in a specific
period of time, with an objective to get
maximum profit from last investment
without impairing the soil fertility.

Characteristic of crop rotation
[Link] should be adaptable to the existing
soil,climate and economic factors.
[Link] sequence of cropping adopted for any
specific area should be based on proper
land utilization .
[Link] rotation should contain a sufficient
acreage of soil improving crops to maintain
and also build up the OM content of the soil.
6
Continue
[Link] areas where lugumes can be
successfully grown.
[Link] rotation should provide roughage
pesturage for live stock kept on farm.
[Link] should be so arranged as to help in
the control of weeds, plant disease and
insect pest.
[Link] should provide for the acreage of the
most profitable cash crops adapted to the
7
area.

ADVANTAGES OF CROP ROTATION
These are the following advantages of a crop rotation :
Higher yield without incurring extra investment.
Enhanced soil fertility and microbial activities.
Avoid accumulation of toxic substances.
Better utilization of nutrients and soil moisture.
Insurance against natural devastation.
Maintain soil health by avoiding insect pest diseases and weed
problems.
Provide proper labor , power and capital distribution throughout
the year.
Higher chances to provide diversified Commodities.
Slow but steady income , which is beneficial to marginal and small
farmers.
Deep rooted crops work the soil below plough layer. 9
Cropping System Overview in Bangladesh
• Bangladesh's agricultural landscape
is diverse, with a variety of crops
grown throughout the year.
• Rice is the staple crop, accounting for
a significant portion of agricultural
production.
• The cropping system is influenced by
the monsoon (kharif) and winter
(rabi) seasons.
10
Crop Rotation Practices in Bangladesh
★Maintains soil fertility, reduces pests and
diseases, improves crop yield.
★Common Rotation Patterns:
>Alternating between rice and legumes
(e.g., pulses)
Rice and other cereals( e.g- wheat)
11
Importance of cropping system and
crop rotation
Benefits:
• Enhance soil structure
• Reduce soil erosion
• Optimize resource utilization
❖ The cropping system and crop rotation
practices in Bangladesh are vital for
sustaining agricultural productivity and
food security.
❖ Continuous adaptation to changing
environmental conditions and adoption
of sustainable practices are crucial for 12
the future of agriculture in Bangladesh.

Conclusion
Crop rotation is a valuable
tool for improving soil
health, increasing crop
productivity, and reducing
the need for chemical inputs.
Overall crop rotation can effectively
reduce the fragility of cropping
systems. Crop Rotation= Healthy soil= Healthy plant
