GRADE 8
JUNE EXAMINATIONS
DEAR GRADE 8S

• This booklet contains all the information you need to


prepare yourself for the June examinations.

Please remember to ask for help sooner, rather than later.

• Each exam starts with a ten minute reading time. Please


take note of the length of each exam.

Your teachers wish you all the best.

EXAM TIMETABLE
EXAM RULES
Arrival

Learners must be at school by 07:30.


All examinations will take place in the Hall. EdTech examinations will take place in
the IT Lab.

Examination session times:


Session 1: 07:45 – 10:15
Break: 10:15 – 10:45
Session 2: 10:45 – 12:30

On certain days, there will be only one session (07:45 – 10:15), and students may
depart early if they do not have a second session.

No late arrivals: Learners must be seated at least 10 minutes before the exam starts.

Absenteeism

Learners absent without a valid reason will receive zero (0) for the exam.

Absence is only excused with a doctor’s letter.

Learners may stay home to prepare on days when they do not have an exam.

Behaviour

Any learner disrupting the examination will be removed from the venue and will not
receive additional time.

During the 10-minute reading time, no writing is allowed.

Learners who start their exam later (due to shorter exam durations) must remain
quiet while others are still writing.

No learner may leave the venue (except for illness) during the first hour or the last
30 minutes of an exam.

No food or drinks (except water) are allowed in the venue.

Electronic Devices

Cell phones, smartwatches, and other electronic devices are not allowed in exam
venues.

It is recommended that these devices be left at home, as the school will not be
responsible for lost or stolen items.

Any learner found with a device or notes in their possession during an exam will
receive zero (0) for that exam.
EXAM RULES
Dress Code

Full school uniform must be worn.

All normal uniform rules apply:


No makeup, nail polish, or jewellery (unless permitted by the school’s Code of
Conduct).
No beanies, hats, hoodies, or blankets are allowed in the exam venue.

Stationery

Stationery must be stored in a clear plastic bag/container (e.g., a Ziplock bag).

No borrowing of stationery is allowed. Learners must bring all required materials,


including calculators, and protractors.

Only BLUE pens may be used to write exams.

Academic Dishonesty

If a learner is caught or suspected of dishonesty:


The original answer script and evidence will be collected.
The learner will be given a new answer script to continue writing.
The incident will be investigated.

If found guilty, the learner will receive an academic zero (0), and the school’s Code of
Conduct will be enforced.

Bathroom Breaks

Learners with medical conditions requiring bathroom breaks must inform the Head
of Academics in advance.
No bathroom breaks are allowed during the first hour or last 30 minutes of any
exam unless there is a valid reason.

Dismissal & Collection

Learners are dismissed 15 minutes after each exam to allow for administrative tasks.
Learners only writing in Session 1 must be collected promptly.

Failure to comply with these rules may result in disciplinary action.


ENGLISH

PAPER ONE: Comprehension and Language MARKS: 80 TIME: 2 hours


Question 1: Comprehension (20 Marks)
Apply Comprehension skills: intext referencing, read the passage thrice, be mindful of mark
allocation
Highlight key words in each question e.g explain, discuss etc.

Question 2: Summary (10 Marks)


MUST be written in paragraph form
Conciseness- keep it brief while maintaining essential meaning
Clarity - use clear and simple language
Identify main ideas
Relevance - include only the most important ideas
Own words - try to use your own words (paraphrase) without changing the essential meaning of
the passage
logical flow - ensure ideas are well-orginised and connected
Eliminate unnecessary details: statistics, quotations, and opinions that are not crucial to the overall
meaning
do not repeat the same idea in different words
Keep to the allotted word count

Question 3: Seen Poetry (15 marks)


“A Hard frost”, “My Mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun”, “Grand Pa”, “Invisible Children”,
“New Boy”, ”Animal rescue”
Elements of poetry: Theme (central idea)
Tone: The poet’s attitude
Mood: The feeling the poem creates in the reader
Structure and form: stanza and line structure (number of lines and stanzas)
Rhyme scheme (identify pattern) e.g AABB, ABAB
Sonnet structural form
Poetic devices and Figurative language and Figures or Speech: Imagery, simile, metaphor etc.
Know the difference between DEFINING and EXPLAINING the devices as well as discussing the
EFFECT the device has to the line, stanza or poem as a whole.
Context: consider the poet’s background, time period, and influences

Question 4: Unseen Poetry (10 Marks)


Compulsory question - The question has to be answered
The aforementioned concepts for Seen poetry apply in an Unseen poem as well
