Overview V91 Virtualization Server

Overview
Virtualization is a technology that allows consolidation of multiple servers into a single
physical server. This consolidation into a 2U rack-mounted package consumes fewer
plant resources. The package is easier to install and maintain. It delivers the
technological foundation for high available topologies enabling live migration from
running VMs from one physical server instance to a redundant partner and centralized
management (CVM) of two or more virtualization servers. The V91 Foxboro DCS
Virtualization Server can host up to fourteen Virtual Machines (VM).
The Model V91 Foxboro DCS virtualization server host is a 2U rack-mount server
running the Microsoft Windows Server® 2016 operating system. In addition, a virtual
machine running the Microsoft Windows Server 2016 operating system can be used
as a Domain Controller for the V91 Model host servers. Through the use of Microsoft
Hyper-V virtualization technology, the V91 is capable of hosting virtual machines
running Microsoft Windows Server 2016 operating system.
The virtual machines that are supported include:
• Foxboro DCS virtual machines with Control Core Services v9.4 or later and
Control Software v7.1 or later on the Foxboro DCS Control Network
• Virtual machines using the Schneider Electric-provided virtual machine operating
system image on networks other than the Control Network
The V91 Server is available with a user-configurable model code.
NOTE: The cover image represents a fully configured server and might show

Features V91 Virtualization Server

V91 Physical Operating System Environment (POSE):

Windows Server 2016 Operating System
The Physical Operating System Environment (POSE) on the V91 server is the
Windows Server 2016 operating system. This pre-installed Windows Server 2016
operating system image on the V91 provides the foundation necessary to support
hosting of virtual machines. The image includes:
• Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization technology, which is required for creating,
hosting, and managing virtual machines
• Veritas System Recovery Virtual Edition for backing up of an entire V91 server
(including all of the hosted virtual machines). A backup can be done live, without
rebooting the V91 or any of the individual virtual machines
• Operating system hardening:
◦ Unnecessary services, software, and programs are removed
◦ Unneeded software ports are disabled
◦ Secure BIOS changes
Since the V91’s POSE Windows Server 2016 operating system’s entire purpose is to
support Schneider Electric virtual machines, the only software to be installed on it is
Schneider Electric-supplied software directly related to the health and support of
virtual machines.
In addition, Foxboro DCS, Foxboro DCS Control Software, or third-party applications
cannot be installed on the Windows Server 2016 operating system image shipped
with the V91 server virtualization host.
The V91 server supports these peripherals: a mouse, QWERTY keyboard, 23-inch flat
panel LCD monitor (purchased separately), optional USB touchscreen (purchased
separately with the monitor), and 1Gb copper / fiber network interface. The V91 server
does not support the use of serial GCIO annunciator keyboards, Foxboro DCS USB
annunciator keyboards, remote graphics units, GPS time synch cards, or local
printers.

V91 Virtual Operating System Environment (VOSE): Virtual

Machines
The V91 server is shipped with a Schneider Electric-created virtual machine operating
system image. By using this supplied virtual machine operating system image with the
Microsoft Hyper-V technology, the V91’s virtual operating system environments
(VOSE) can be created. Each virtual machine created with the Schneider Electric-
supplied image has its own self-contained virtual operating system environment
(VOSE) which includes:
• 64-bit Windows Server 2016 operating system which is required for loading
software applications onto the virtual machine
• Veritas System Recovery 2018 Virtual Edition v18 (K0204BE) software; which is
required for backing up individual virtual machines. The procedure to back-up a
virtual machine using Veritas System Recovery is very similar to performing the
procedure on a physical machine.
• Operating system hardening:
◦ Unnecessary services, software, and programs are removed
◦ Software ports not required are disabled
Virtual machines can be used with Control Core Services v9.4 or later and Control
Software v7.1 or later on the Foxboro DCS Control Network, and can also provide a
platform for Schneider Electric, third-party, and user-written applications.

PSS 41H-4V91, Rev C 5

V91 Virtualization Server Features

A virtual machine can:

• Host Foxboro DCS control stations
• Serve as an application platform
• Run Remote Desktop Services (formally known as Terminal Services)
• Connect to a thin client over the DCS Auxiliary Communications Network to
provide human-machine interface (HMI) station functionality
• Use security enhancements provided by these McAfee software packages:
◦ For stations operating in Local Edition mode, McAfee Endpoint Security (ENS)
provides advanced Threat Prevention
◦ For stations operating in Enterprise Edition mode, McAfee ePolicy
Orchestrator (ePO) provides all the security of ENS plus Rogue System
Detection, Application Whitelisting, Integrity Control and Device Control for
Data Loss Prevention (DLP)
NOTE: Virtual machines (VMs) can be ordered with or without EndPoint
Protection (EPP). Ordering without EPP is only applicable for markets where local
teams add an EPP solution to the VMs before delivering to client. When ordered
with EPP selected, McAfee Endpoint Security licensing is included with each VM.
However, it is not pre-installed/configured on the system.

NOTICE
POTENTIAL SYSTEM VULNERABILITIES
Install and configure EPP on all virtual machines (VMs) to help protect against
system vulnerabilities.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in system vulnerabilities.

The virtual machines hosted by the V91 server connect to the network through
internal virtual switches that map virtual machines to the V91’s physical 1Gb copper /
fiber Ethernet ports. The virtual switch network can be configured to map network
connectivity to:
• The Control Network
• The DCS Auxiliary Communications Network (ACN), a 1Gb network comprised of
managed Ethernet switches
• Other auxiliary networks
A combination of these different network types can be used.
The virtual machine’s network connectivity is configured independently from other
virtual machines hosted by the same V91 server. Each network utilizes a dedicated
physical 1Gb copper / fiber Ethernet port. The Control Network has two dedicated
1Gb Ethernet ports while the DCS Auxiliary Communications Network (ACN) has one
or more dedicated 1Gb Ethernet ports optionally configured to use NIC teaming.
With the exception of the Ethernet network ports, virtual machines cannot access the
V91 physical ports (serial, USB, etc.) Therefore, virtual machines only support
peripherals that are connected through the network, such as thin clients and network
printers. Remote graphics units, GPS time synch cards, and local printers are not
supported on virtual machines. A virtual machine can access the USB annunciator
keyboard through a thin client.

Features V91 Virtualization Server

Virtual Machine Configurations

A V91 server can host virtual machines with these configurations:
• Single processor virtual machines
• Multi-processor virtual machines (only supported for virtual machines with Control
Core Services v9.4 or higher connected to the Control Network and virtual
machines using the Schneider Electric-provided virtual machine operating system
image on networks other than the Control Network)
• A mix of single processor virtual machines and multi-processor virtual machines

Sizing
• A V91 server can support up to fourteen virtual machines.
• The maximum number of RDP sessions depends on the number and types of
applications being run in the remote sessions. This includes the number of
process control points being updated, number of alarms being delivered, number
of displays open, etc. If your application needs are high, you might find the actual
number of client sessions to be lower. Experimental results indicate that for
planning purposes, the number of RDP sessions per virtual machine cannot
exceed 30 RDP sessions for FoxView VMs and 10 RDP sessions for Control HMI
VMs.
• The total number of RDP sessions across all VMs on a V91 server cannot exceed
60.

Licensing
There are no Foxboro DCS licenses associated with the V91 server itself. However,
each virtual machine must have the proper Foxboro DCS license. Virtual machine
Foxboro DCS licenses are identical to physical machine licenses.

Optional High Availability For Vital Applications

The Foxboro DCS has the option of running vital run-time applications such as the
Control HMI, current Alarm Displays, and Historian (collectors and servers) in parallel
on two separate machines. When this functionality is combined with virtualization to
run on two physical V91 servers - separated geographically to keep a single condition
from affecting both hosts – time, effort, and cost to restore system can be reduced.
V91 Server enhances the virtualization product offering by providing the ability to
automate the creation of VM replicas from one V91 host to another using Microsoft
Replication. It also reduces disruption of planned maintenance with the ability to move
live VMs from one V91 host to another with no operator interruption using Live
Migration.

Overview of Thin Clients Thin Client

Overview of Thin Clients

Thin clients are physical hardware terminals with a compact form factor that are
capable of monitoring and responding to system events using the operating software
via a remote connection to a remote server.
Schneider Electric qualified the HP® t740 Windows 10, Quad Monitor single NIC
(RH103FL) and dual NIC (RH103FN) thin clients for use with the Foxboro DCS. A
QWERTY keyboard is shipped with this thin client.
Thin clients support these configuration options, which must be purchased separately:
• A mouse or trackball
• Up to four LCD monitors (part numbers P0928JJ, P0928JH, and RH103FR)
• USB speaker set (part number RH103DN)
• Up to four optional Annunciator Keyboards (part numbers P0924TT and
P0924WV)
A USB DVD drive is required to install the SeRdpConnectionManager DVD.
NOTE: For thin clients with QWERTY keyboards only, FoxPanels can be used as
an alternative to the Annunciator Keyboard.
Thin clients can access their Foxboro DCS software suite via network connections to

With a smaller footprint than a workstation, the t740 HP® thin clients are mounted local
to their remote user and used in traditional and virtualized Foxboro DCS systems.
Thin clients allow operators to perform similar tasks as a workstation and provide
ease of use and increased security as compared to physical stations.
The t740 thin clients can:
• Serve as human machine interface (HMI) stations with remote connections to
remote servers running Microsoft® Remote Desktop Services or SE RDP
Connection Manager
• Remotely, allow you to view and manage your Foxboro DCS software suite
• Communicate with Foxboro DCS servers through the Auxiliary Communications
Network (ACN) via a single or redundant NIC network connection
• Automatically shift between RDP servers if one has a detected failure

Configurations
Thin clients can be set up in one of these configurations:
• A specific thin client is restricted to connect to one particular virtual machine or
one physical Foxboro DCS server.
• A specific thin client is connected automatically to only one particular virtual
machine, or one physical Foxboro DCS server when the thin client boots up.

PSS 41H-4THNCLNT, Rev D 3

Thin Client Overview of Thin Clients

• A specific thin client has the option to connect to one of several different virtual
machines and/or physical Foxboro DCS servers for one at a time redundancy.
• A specific thin client has the option to connect to multiple virtual machines and/or
multiple physical Foxboro DCS servers simultaneously.
• A specific thin client is connected automatically to multiple virtual machines and/
or multiple physical Foxboro DCS servers when the thin client boots up.
• A specific thin client used within the Local Edition Control Core Services and Off-
Domain in the Enterprise Edition Control Core Services.
• Trellix ENS protection is installed as a self-managed solution.

Sizing
A single remote server running Microsoft Remote Desktop Services can support up to
30 FoxView simultaneous remote sessions and up to 10 Control HMI remote
sessions. Collectively, the V91 server virtualization host cannot support more than 60
Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sessions across the VMs due to bandwidth
constraints of the V91 physical Ethernet ports.
NOTE: The allowable number of RDP sessions depends on the number and types
of applications being run in the remote sessions.

4 PSS 41H-4THNCLNT, Rev D

Cybersecurity Thin Client

Cybersecurity
Thin clients can be configured to restrict connections to certain remote servers. After a
thin client establishes a connection with a remote server, the remote server’s
configuration determines what privileges to grant the user based on the user profile
logged into the remote server.
As an option, Trellix Endpoint Security (part number K0204BM) can provide additional
security enhancement features to help complement the security features already built
into our products. Trellix Endpoint Security (ENS) helps provide the advanced Threat
Prevention feature. The license entitlement for the first five years after purchase is
included when purchased for the t740 thin client. After five years, a renewal is
required.
For details about Trellix Endpoint Security, see Trellix Endpoint Protection Installation
and User’s Guide (B0700WR).

PSS 41H-4THNCLNT, Rev D 5

Thin Client Licensing

Licensing
These types of licensing apply when using thin clients with a Foxboro DCS:
• Software Suite License for Foxboro DCS
• Microsoft licensing

Foxboro DCS, Control Core Services, and Control Software

Licensing
• There is no specific Foxboro DCS, CCS, or CS hardware license for thin clients.
• There is no specific Foxboro DCS, CCS, or CS software license for thin clients.
• Existing Software Suite License for Foxboro DCS still applies with regard to
remote sessions. However, the license resides with the remote server not with
the remote client.
For example, the Foxboro DCS Software Suite license is needed for any Foxboro
DCS server (physical machine or virtual machine) as well as the thin clients
connected to these servers. Depending on the type of Foxboro DCS software is
installed or used on the server or thin client, the correct FX license part numbers
need to be used.

Microsoft Licensing
• Microsoft Windows Server permits remote access for two users without CALs
solely for administrative and technical product support purposes. These sessions
are in addition to the local desktop session which can run in conjunction with
these RDP sessions.
• There are additional Microsoft licenses needed if a thin client is being used for
additional connections to Microsoft Remote Desktop Services servers (formally
known as Terminal Services sessions). These licenses are available in
BuyAutomation in five license packs for both a “license per user” or “license per
device” model.

Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Client Access License

(CAL)
• Formally known as Terminal Services Client Access License (TS CAL).
• An RDS CAL is necessary for every additional remote session that connects to
and displays applications running on a Remote Desktop Services server.
• Foxboro DCS servers (V91, H90) do not ship with any RDS CALs included.
Therefore, you must determine the number of Users or Devices to be included in
your CAL license scheme.
• A server running Windows Server 2016 requires Windows Server 2016 RDS
CALS.

6 PSS 41H-4THNCLNT, Rev D

Licensing Thin Client

• Foxboro part number J0202AW provides five Remote Desktop Services 2016
Device CALs. Foxboro part number J0202AV provides five Remote Desktop
Services 2016 User CALs.
◦ RDS CALs per DEVICE license: One RDS CAL per device is required for
each device which accesses a remote desktop session. Devices can be thin
clients, computers or portable devices. Once a device has accessed the
remote desktop server, the RDS CAL per device license will be consumed by
that device and no other device can use that license. That device will continue
to be able to connect to the remote desktop server with any user logging on.
◦ RDS CALs per USER license: One RDS CAL per user is required for each
user that accesses a remote desktop session. RDS CALs per user licenses
are tied to the users logged on to the remote desktop server, regardless of the
device they are connecting from.
◦ RDS CALS must be installed and activated on a license server (usually an
RDS server).

Windows Server Client Access License (CAL)

• A CAL is necessary for every remote session that will connect to a Remote
Desktop Services server.
• A physical Foxboro DCS server (H90) ships with five CALs included.
• A Foxboro DCS V91 server virtualization host ships with a minimum of five CALs
included but can include up to 35 based on the particular V91 model code.
• Additional server CALs are available in BuyAutomation. Foxboro part number
J0202AT provides five Microsoft Windows Server 2016 Device CALs. Foxboro
part number J0202AU provides five Microsoft Windows Server 2016 User CALs.
Server CALs are a paper license only and do not require activation.

Overview Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Monitors

Overview
The EcoStruxure Foxboro DCS Process Automation System has advanced
visualization software to help support plant operators in safely and securely achieving
maximum production. Modem high definition liquid crystal display monitors are
provided in the high definition aspect ratio.
Foxboro DCS systems offer 24-inch LCD monitors.

24-inch LCD Monitor

The 24-inch flat panel LCD monitor (RH103FR) has a picture matrix of 1920x1080
pixels which provides excellent images when driven at its standard resolution while
producing very good images at off-standard resolutions. The monitor is capable of
accepting digital DVI-D and DisplayPort and Analog VGA video signals. This monitor
can be used with workstations at its full 1920x1080 resolution and with workstations at
lesser resolutions.
As a tabletop unit, the monitor comes with a stand that has swivel, tilt, rotate and
height adjustments.

24-inch, Tabletop

While the previously offered 19-inch and 20-inch monitors had a standard 4:3 aspect
ratio, the 24-inch monitor has a standard 16:9 aspect ratio to support widescreen
resolutions, although it can support images at the 4:3 aspect ratio as well.
Workstations require the Foxboro DCS FoxView/FoxDraw application, version 10.2.4
or later and 1920x1080 high definition capability to support the 16:9 aspect ratio of the
24-inch monitor. This application is available for workstations, which support Foxboro
DCS Control Core Services software v9.0 and later. It supports displays in both the
4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio. The application includes a conversion utility to convert
displays previously configured for the 4:3 aspect ratio to the 16:9 aspect ratio
supported by the 24-inch monitor.

PSS 41H-4VDU, Rev B 3

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Monitors Overview

Because the 24-inch monitors also support 4:3 aspect ratio displays, workstations
without both 1920 x1080 resolution and FoxView/FoxDraw 10.2.4 or later required for
16:9 displays can still use the 24-inch monitor to replace the previously offered 19-
inch or 20-inch monitors with 4:3 displays. While the 24-inch flat panel monitors work
best in their 1920x1080 standard resolution and newer workstations have this
capability, many older workstations (as noted in Flat Panel Monitor Software Setup for
UNIX and Windows Workstations (B0193PL)) do not. As a result, 24-inch monitors on
workstations with 4:3 aspect ratio displays must have their associated graphics cards
set to the specific resolutions listed in B0193PL.
NOTE: A single workstation cannot support a mix of 24-inch and the previously
offered 19-inch or 20-inch monitors.

Overview Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Monitors

European Certification
As symbolized by the CE logo on these monitors, they are in compliance with the
applicable European Union directives.

Video Screen Replacement

The placement of the video display in relation to the workstation can affect your choice
of video cables. In general, analog cables are suitable for use up to 30 m (100 ft)
whereas digital cables have a maximum limit of 4.8 m (16 ft), but there are exceptions.

Color Consistency
These monitors are sourced through a global supply chain that treats this category of
equipment as a commodity item. As such, minor color inconsistencies among
delivered monitors are to be expected. If the application requires color adjustments or
strict consistency of color presentation, contact Global Customer Support at https://
pasupport.schneider-electric.com (registration required) for assistance in selecting
monitors of the appropriate capability.

Overview Field Control Processor 280 (FCP280)

Overview
The EcoStruxure™ Foxboro™ DCS Field Control Processor 280 (FCP280) is a
distributed, optionally fault-tolerant, field-mounted controller module. The FCP280
performs regulatory, logic, timing, and sequential control together with connected
Foxboro DCS Fieldbus Modules (FBMs). It also performs data acquisition and alarm
detection and notification. The FCP280 connects to the Foxboro DCS Control
Network via standard fiber optic or copper 100 Mbps Ethernet cables from network
adapters installed on its baseplate (see the next figure).
The FCP280 requires Foxboro DCS Control Core Services software v9.0 or later. A
system with the FCP280 and this software is called an EcoStruxure Foxboro DCS
Process Automation System.

The fault-tolerant version of the FCP280 consists of two processor modules. These
modules are installed in adjacent FCP280 slots in dedicated baseplates for high
speed communication between the modules.
The FCP280 accepts four PIO channels (that is, four separate HDLC fieldbuses) via
the four Fieldbus ports on its baseplate. These four Fieldbuses are referred to
collectively as the “Expanded fieldbus.”

4 PSS 41H-1FCP280, Rev. D

Overview Field Control Processor 280 (FCP280)

An optional dual cable baseplate is available that supports four PIO channels, but
separate A versus B bus connectors are provided along with dedicated connectors for
the optional Time Strobe inputs.
Fieldbus connections from the optional dual cable baseplate to standard or compact
200 Series FBMs require separate A versus B bus cables plus a dual “D” connection
adapter on the FBM baseplate (RH926KW).
The number of FBMs that an FCP280 can support varies depending on the types of
FBMs used:
• 200 Series FBMs exclusively used with FCP280 - Each Fieldbus port on the
FCP280 baseplate can connect to a baseplate chain with up to 32 Compact or
standard 200 Series FBMs per chain via the 2 Mbps HDLC fieldbus for up to 128
modules.
• 200 Series and 100 Series FBMs (dual baud configurations) used with FCP280.
The FCP280 can support a total of 128 100 Series FBMs (Y-module) or
competitive devices (such as Foxboro DCS system migration FBMs) in one or
more baseplate chains, with the remainder of the FCP280’s 128 module limit
being 200 Series FBMs, depending on the Fieldbus loading of the FCP280. For
example, an FCP280 could support 64 100 Series FBMs and 64 200 Series
FBMs (as 64 + 64 = 128). Main and expansion FBMs are considered as two
FBMs for counting purposes. As well, no more than 64 100 Series FBMs are
allowed on each PIO bus/baseplate port. See the next two figures.
NOTE: Certain competitive migration or supported third-party modules such as
the EcoStruxure Foxboro DCS Process Automation System Migration Fieldbus
Modules and Pepperl+Fuchs™ I/O modules may increase this 128 module
maximum per FCP280. For the maximum numbers of each of these migration/
third-party modules supported by the FCP280, see the supported migration
products books in Field Control Processor 280 (FCP280) User’s Guide
(B0700FW).
NOTE: The dual cable baseplate does not support connections to 100 Series
FBMs or equivalent competitive migration and third-party modules.
NOTE: Although the FCP280 is capable of communicating with the maximum
number of FBMs (128), some restrictions may constrain a useful control system's
design, thereby limiting the number of FBMs that can be installed.
When supporting 200 Series and 100 Series FBMs, each Fieldbus port (PIO channel)
is dedicated to supporting either a 268 Kbps HDLC fieldbus (for 100 Series FBMs) or
a 2 Mbps HDLC fieldbus (for 200 Series FBMs) — not both.
For connections to 100 Series FBMs, an FBI200 pair is required to extend
communications up to 1,830 m (6,000 ft). See the next figure.
NOTE: When replacing a CP10, CP30, CP40, or CP60 with a FCP280 and
keeping all its 100 Series FBMs, an FBI200 is required to be installed between the
CP and FBMs to reduce potential system messages.
The Fieldbus splitter (RH928CV) is used to directly connect a Fieldbus port to a 268
Kbps HDLC fieldbus. This provides a connector for any Fieldbus port on the FCP280
baseplate, and two Termination Cable Assembly (TCA) termination blocks for the
twinaxial cabling from the 100 Series FBMs.
The FCP280 can also communicate with serial and Ethernet devices, such as PLCs,
via Field Device System Integrators (special FBMs). This allows you to connect to
new device interfaces without any changes to the controller software.
To estimate the FCP280’s processor load, see Field Control Processor 280 (FCP280)
Sizing Guidelines and Excel Workbook (B0700FY).
For a description of the FCP280 baseplates, see Standard 200 Series Baseplates
(PSS 41H-2SBASPLT).

FCP280)

The FCP280 supports up to 128 FBMs, which can consist of one of these options: 128
200 Series FBMs, 128 100 Series FBMs, or a mix of 128 200 Series and 100 Series
FBMs. If you use a mix of 100 Series and 200 Series FBMs, the FBMs cannot be
mixed concurrently on the same PIO channel. Each PIO channel must be configured
to either a 268 Kbps or 2 Mbps HDLC fieldbus.
The 100 Series FBMs can be connected to any fieldbus port on the FCP280
baseplate, provided that the overall FBM limit of 128 100 Series FBMs is maintained
for the FCP280. Up to 64 100 Series FBMs are supported on each PIO channel/
baseplate port.
An FBI200 may be included on this connection to extend the distance between the
100 Series FBIs and the FCP280 baseplate. In mixed configurations (100 and 200
Series FBMs) the FCP280 can communicate on the 268 Kbps HDLC fieldbus up to 60
m (198 ft). When communicating with a 268 Kbps HDLC fieldbus only, the FCP280
can communicate on this fieldbus up to 1 km (3,200 ft). The FBI100 pair may be used
in place of FBI200s. For sizing constraints and devices supported by the FBI200, see
FBI200 Fieldbus Isolator/Filter (PSS 41H-2FBI200). For sizing constraints and
devices supported by the FBI100, see FBI100 Fieldbus Isolator/Filter (PSS 21H-2Y16
B4). The FBI200/FBI100 extends the distance of the HDLC fieldbus between the
FCP280 and the FBMs up to 1,830 m (6,000 ft). The FBI200 can be used with 200
Series FBMs as well to extend the cabling distances to them. The FBI100 is used
exclusively with 100 Series FBMs to extend the cabling distances to them.

Features Field Control Processor 280 (FCP280)

Fiber and Copper Network Adapters

FCP280 modules connect to a pair of fiber or copper adapters which each connect to
one Ethernet switch in the Control Network. The FCP280 baseplate passes inbound
traffic from either of the two switches to both FCP280s, and pass outbound traffic from
the primary FCP280 module to either switch.

Figure 4 - Fiber Optic and Copper Network Adapters

Fiber Adapter (RH924WA) Copper Adapter (RH924UQ)

The fiber or copper adapters mount on the FCP280 baseplate as shown in Fault-
Tolerant FCP280 Module Pair Mounted on Vertical Mounted 2-Position FCP280
Baseplate, page 4. They receive their power from the baseplate.

Remote Mounting
The FCP280 simplifies the Foxboro DCS System architecture, maintaining control
while only requiring housing (via field enclosures), host workstations with the Control
Core Services v9.0 or later, and Ethernet switches for communication via the Control
Network architecture. For more information, see The Foxboro DCS Control Network
Ethernet Equipment (PSS 41H-7NWEQUIP).
The field-mounted FCP280 is an integral part of the highly-distributed Control Network
where controllers are closely aligned to specific process units mounted in close
proximity to their I/O and the actual equipment being controlled. Coordination between
process units takes place via a fiber optic 100 Mbps Ethernet network.
The FCP280 and its network adapters are packaged in a rugged, die cast aluminum
housing that does not require venting due to its efficient design. The FCP280 and its
network adapters are CE certified, and it can be mounted without expensive special
cabinets to help prevent electronic emissions. The FCP280, network adapters, and
baseplate can be mounted in Class G3 harsh environments.

PSS 41H-1FCP280, Rev. D 9

Field Control Processor 280 (FCP280) Features

Enhanced Reliability (Fault-Tolerance)

The unique and patented fault-tolerant operation of the FCP280 improves reliability
relative to legacy process controllers. The fault-tolerant version of the FCP280
consists of two modules operating in parallel, with two Ethernet connections to the
Control Network. The two FCP280 modules, married together as a fault-tolerant pair,
provide continuous operation of the controller in the event of virtually any hardware
occurrence within one module of the pair.
Both modules receive and process information simultaneously, and faults are
detected by the modules themselves. One of the significant methods of fault detection
is comparison of communication messages at the module external interfaces.
Messages only leave the FCP280 when both FCP280s agree on the message being
sent (bit for bit match). Upon detection of a fault, self-diagnostics are run by both
modules to determine which module is affected. The non-affected module then
assumes control without affecting normal system operations.
This fault-tolerant solution has the following major advantages over controllers that
are merely redundant:
• No bad messages are sent to the field or to applications using controller data
because no message is allowed out of the controller unless both modules match
bit for bit on the message being sent.
• The secondary controller is synchronized with the primary one, which helps
ensure up to the moment data in the event of a primary controller occurrence.
• The secondary controller will have latent flaws detected prior to any switchover
because it is performing exactly the same operations as the primary controller.

Upgrade Options
Multiple options are available for replacing existing control processors with the
FCP280. A fault-tolerant FCP280 may replace a fault-tolerant FCP270 or ZCP270. It
may import the CP database from the CP270 it is replacing, for compatibility and
minimal configuration time.
The FCP280 provides an increase in performance and block processing capacity over
the CP270s. When replacing the FCP270s with the FCP280, you do not need the
FEM100 hardware.
For ease of replacement, the fault-tolerant or non-fault-tolerant FCP280 in the
standard baseplate has the same dimensions as the fault-tolerant or non-fault-tolerant
FCP270 in its baseplate.
The dual cable baseplate has larger dimensions than the standard baseplate.
Cabling the 100 Series FBMs or Migration products to an FCP280 baseplate consists
of extending the remote 268 Kbps fieldbus between enclosures. This is accomplished
using termination cable assemblies (TCAs) and Fieldbus Isolators (FBIs) to provide
connections between primary and extended fieldbus segments.
The optional FBI200 can extend the 2 Mbps HDLC fieldbus between 200 Series FBMs
from 60 m (198 ft) up to 305 m (1000 ft). As well, for standard FCP280 baseplates, it
can extend the 268 Kbps HDLC fieldbus between 100 Series FBMs from 60 m (198 ft)
in a mixed 100 & 200 Series FBMs configuration (or 300 m (1,000 ft) in an exclusive
100 Series FBMs configuration) up to 1830 m (6,000 ft).
As with earlier generations of control processors, up to 128 100 Series FBMs
(including expansion modules) attach to standard baseplate Fieldbus ports through
Fieldbus Isolators (with a maximum of 64 100 Series FBMs per port). Up to 24 100
Series FBMs, excluding expansion modules, can connect to each isolator. However,
the expansion modules are considered 100 Series FBMs in this “128 100 Series
FBMs” maximum discussed in this PSS. Available upgrade scenarios are available in
Field Control Processor 280 (FCP280) User’s Guide (B0700FW).

Features Field Control Processor 280 (FCP280)

FBI200 Fieldbus Isolator/Filter

The FBI200 Fieldbus Isolator/Filter extends the length of the 268 Kbps module
Fieldbus from the FCP280 to 100 Series FBMs and similar competitive migration
modules up to 1,830 m (6,000 ft) over a twinaxial Fieldbus cable. See Typical FCP280
Network Configuration with Mixed 100 Series and 200 Series FBM Functionality
(Simplified), page 6.
It can also extend the 2 Mbps HDLC fieldbus to 200 Series FBMs up to 305 m (1,000
ft).
For more information on the FBI200, see FBI200 Fieldbus Isolator/Filter (PSS 41H-
2FBI200).

Firmware Upgrades While On-Line

For fault-tolerant FCP280 modules, on-line image upgrade (OLUG) replaces the
executable image (operating system) of a running FCP280 with a newer image.
The enhanced on-line image upgrade (EOLUG) improves on this process by
upgrading the FCP280 modules without having to shut down the equipment being
controlled by the FCP280. This form of upgrade helps prevent any significant bumps
to the local control process, removes the initialization of sequence logic and
decreases the Object Manager reconnection time.

Time Synchronization, SOE, TDR/TDA

The Foxboro DCS System supports time synchronization using either an externally
maintained optional source of Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) from GPS satellites
or an internal source using proprietary software. FCP280s that receive time updates
via the external time source synchronize their FBMs to 1 ms. For more information on
time synchronization, see Time Synchronization Overview (PSS 41S-1TIME).
Time stamping is used for alarm messages, values sent to the historian, the Foxboro
DCS Sequence Of Events (SOE) and Transient Data Recorder (TDR), and Transient
Data Analyzer (TDA) features.
SOE data are discrete points that are time stamped at the FBM, optionally to 1 ms,
and sent to the workstation on a change basis. TDR/TDA data are analog or digital
points that are time stamped at the FBM and sent to the workstation every 10 ms.
These features are supported by client software in the workstation. For information on
this new software, see Field Control Processor 280 (FCP280) Integrated Control
Software (PSS 41S-3FCPICS).
Time strobe signals are delivered from custom switches over Ethernet cables.
However, the method by which these Ethernet cables connect to the FCP280
baseplates differs depending on the baseplate. The standard vertical and horizontal
baseplates’ RH924YF's first HDLC connector (upper right-hand side of the baseplate)
accepts time strobe signals via time strobe adapter (RH924ZQ), which is discussed in
"Module Fieldbus and Time Strobe Splitters/Terminators" in Standard and Compact
200 Series Subsystem User's Guide (B0400FA). Receiving the time strobe signals on
the standard baseplate requires the use of the RH924ZQ adapter on the first HDLC
port on the baseplate, and in this configuration, this port cannot be used for any other
purpose. The dual cable baseplate (RH100JX) has two dedicated RJ-45 ports on its
upper right-hand side to accept these Ethernet cables directly without the use of the
RH924ZQ adapter.

Field Control Processor 280 (FCP280) Features

Software Control Features

The FCP280 performs regulatory, logic, timing, and sequential control, as well as data
acquisition, alarm detection, and alarm notification. Process variables are controlled
using time-proven algorithms (mathematical computations performing specific
functions). The algorithms are contained in functional control blocks, which on-site
process engineers configure to implement the desired control strategies.
The versatility of the algorithms, coupled with the variety of FBMs available, provides
control capabilities suited to a broad range of process applications. Control strategies
ranging from simple feedback and cascade loops to highly sophisticated feedforward,
nonlinear, and complex characterization control schemes are readily implemented.
The FCP280 also supports the following features:
• Setting and reading the FCP280 letterbug via the buttons on the faceplate
• Alarm enhancements to function blocks:
◦ Re-alarming on changes to alarm priority
◦ Re-alarming based upon a configurable time delay deadband, and alarm
suppression based on time
• Optional UTC external time synchronization
• Improved controller performance
• Optional self-hosting mode allows the FCP280 to start up and run, executing its
configured control scheme using the checkpoint file stored in flash memory. This
allows the FCP280 to boot itself with a valid control database even if its host
workstation is not present.
• Support for high speed capabilities such as ladder logic, Motor Driven Actuator
Controller (MDACT), and Distributed Proportional Integral Derivative functionality
(DPIDA)

termination. All four Fieldbus port pairs (A/B) on the dual cable baseplate are
internally terminated by default without the use of DIP switches.
The FCP280 baseplates can be added in the field to existing or new configurations.
The standard FCP280 baseplates have similar dimensions as the FCP270 2-position
baseplates for ease of replacement, while the dual cable baseplates are larger and
wider.
When upgrading existing CP60 systems to use FCP280s, you can recover an
additional two FBM positions after removing the old FCM10E/FCM10Efs.
The following splitters and terminators can be used with FCP280 baseplate:
• The Fieldbus Baseplate Terminator (P0916RB) is used to terminate either the CP
end of the HDLC fieldbus or the last 200 Series baseplate in the daisy chain when
Time Strobe or split A/B fieldbus cables are not required.

Figure 6 - Fieldbus Baseplate Terminator (P0916RB)

• For standard baseplates only, Fieldbus Baseplate Terminator/Splitter (RH924ZJ

for Fieldbus port 1, or RH928CY for the Fieldbus port on a standard FCP280
baseplate) allows splitting of the A and B Module Fieldbus signals into different
cables. This splitter can be used to interconnect optional redundant cables
between FCP280 baseplates and 200 Series baseplates. It can also be used to
terminate both the fieldbus and time strobe signals.
