Understanding Plate Tectonics Basics

Plate tectonics is the scientific theory explaining the movement of Earth's lithospheric plates, which shapes the surface and causes geological phenomena like earthquakes and volcanoes. There are three types of plate boundaries: convergent, divergent, and transform, each associated with specific geological activities. Supporting evidence for this theory includes fossil distribution, the fit of continents, and seafloor spreading.

🔍 Definition

Plate Tectonics is the scientific theory that explains the movement of

Earth’s lithospheric plates across the asthenosphere. These movements
shape Earth’s surface, causing earthquakes, volcanoes, mountain
formation, and oceanic trenches.

🌐 Earth’s Structure (Quick Recap):

 Crust – outermost layer (continental & oceanic)

 Mantle – semi-solid rock where convection occurs
 Core – outer (liquid) and inner (solid) iron-rich center

🧱 What Are Tectonic Plates?

 Massive, rigid sections of Earth’s lithosphere

 Float on the more fluid asthenosphere
 There are 7 major plates and many minor ones
🔄 Types of Plate Boundaries:

1. Convergent Boundary (→←)

a. Plates collide
b. Forms mountains, volcanoes, trenches
c. Example: Himalayas (Indian + Eurasian plates)
2. Divergent Boundary (←→)
a. Plates move apart
b. Forms mid-ocean ridges, rift valleys
c. Example: Mid-Atlantic Ridge
3. Transform Boundary (↑↓)
a. Plates slide past each other
b. Causes earthquakes
c. Example: San Andreas Fault

🔥 Driving Mechanisms:

 Mantle convection – heat from the core causes rock to cycle

 Slab pull – dense subducting plates pull the rest down
 Ridge push – magma at divergent zones pushes plates apart

🌋 Geological Activity:

 Most earthquakes and volcanoes occur at plate boundaries

 Ring of Fire – high volcanic activity around the Pacific Plate

🧪 Supporting Evidence:

 Fossil distribution
 Puzzle fit of continents (e.g., South America & Africa)
 Rock formations and mountain ranges
 Seafloor spreading discovered at mid-ocean ridges

📎 Fun Fact:
The theory of plate tectonics evolved from Alfred Wegener’s earlier idea
of continental drift, first proposed in 1912!
