Essay on ‘Making History’ by Brian Friel.
Making History by Brian Friel.

In this essay the author examines the extent to which Is the character of Hugh O Neill is more
influenced by private feelings or by public duty.

In Brian Friels play Making History the reader wonders whether the character of Hugh O Neill is
more influenced by private feelings or public duty. By private feeling s I mean beliefs, private
views and opinions and his public duty is his obligations to the Irish people. It should be noted that
Friels portrayal of the character O Neill caused great controversy amongst readers. The strong
Irish man O Neill was once seen as in history is no longer present. Instead we see a very complex
and almost emotional character in Friel s play. This leads us to ... Show more content on

This was to represent O Neill in his later life. O Neill ends his speech about England with that trivial
little hurt, that single failure in years of courtesy has pulled relentlessly in the corner of my heart.
Until now. And for no reason that pulse is quiet and all my affection for Sir Henry returns without
qualification. (Pause.) But all that is of no interest to anyone but myself.
Here we see Hugh s troubled mind. We see that he all of a sudden does not want to live up to his
Great Irish name but instead live the way Sir Henry wanted him too. Friel s use of the dramatic
(pause) shows how Hugh s mind is in constant battle. He is unaware what to do next. However it is
because of his public duty that he realises this means nothing to anyone else but himself. Hugh
realises he must continue in fighting against the English Rule and pushes his private feelings a side.

In the opening scene of the play we see a very different Hugh O Neill to what the audience would
previously have seen. Immediately we see him floating between romantic thoughts and business
thoughts. He is distracted as he is thinking about the arrival of his new wife Mabel. Harry is trying
to read letter s to him and tell him the current news but Hugh is inattentive as he places flowers
around the room. In this scene Friel uses the dramatic technique of imagery and symbolism again.
On the surface, the flowers are seen as props but they are used as a

The Background:
The Indian telecom scenario had changed ever since the Union government of India changed its
strategy on the presence of private sector in the Telecom sector. As a result Vodafoneentered India in
the year 2005, by acquiring a stake of 10% in Bharti Televentures which later became Bharti Airtel
Limited. Vodafone had a greater interest in the Indian market ,which were supported by the Indian
government by increasing the limit of Foreign Direct Investment(FDI) from 49 per cent to 74 per

Inspite of making a foray into the promising telecom market of India, Vodafone had to still prove its
mettle in cellular service quality.
The Brand Vodafone required a different kind of promotion to establish its own brand recall in the
minds of the people which is stronger than that of Hutch and in the long run the Hutch brand fades
out of the people s memory.

The Transition: Hutch to Vodafone

Vodafone s new advertising campaign in India carried on with the same popular pug that has
become a brand ambassador for Hutch. Where ever you go, our network follows, was the previous
slogan with the pug following the child wherever he goes. Now, with Hutchison Essar becoming part
of the Vodafone Group, the new campaign had started with Vodafone Essarearmarking Rs. 2.5
billion on the transition from Hutch to Vodafone. The main message of the brand transition exercise:
The new Vodafone is the same old Hutch. In the advertisement, the pug sees a new home when it
returns after an outing and feels the change is better. The new catch phrase will be Make the most of

Vodafone had tied up with Star India to run a complete roadblock of its fresh campaign on the
entire network by unveiling the 24 hour nationwide rebranding campaign. Vodafone used all of the
commercial airtime across all 13 channels in five languages (Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi and
English) from 9 pm on 20

1. This story is about the Supreme Court s decision. What process did this case have to go through
to get to the Supreme Court?

Parties who are not satisfied with the decision of a lower court must petition the U.S. Supreme
Court to hear their case. The primary means to petition the court for review is to ask it to grant a
writ of certiorari. This is a request that the Supreme Court order a lower court to send up the record
of the case for review (Supreme Court Decisions, 2015).

Rule 23.1 governs derivative suits in which a plaintiff seeks to assert a right belonging to a
corporation (or similar entity) in which the plaintiff is a shareholder, on behalf of the corporation
that is not pursuing the claim itself. Rule 23.2 governs actions by or against unincorporated
associations (Rule 23, 2009).
Diversity of citizenship is one of the factors that will allow a federal district court to exercise its
authority to hear a lawsuit. This authority is called diversity jurisdiction. It means that a case
involving questions that must be answered according to state laws may be heard in federal court
if the parties on the two sides of the case are from different states. No matter how many parties are
involved in a lawsuit, there must be complete diversity in order for the federal court to exercise this
type of authority. If a single plaintiff is a citizen of the same state as any defendant, there is no
diversity and the case must be pursued in a state court (Diversity, n.d.).
Because the defendants were from the same state as the plaintiff, this would not fall under a diversity
of citizenship case. This case was about equal opportunity and gender discrimination not about
diversity in the sense of cultural diversity.

Moral Revelation Theme
Moral revelation and redemption seems to be the focus of Flannery O Connor s theme in A Good
Man is Hard to Find, Revelation, and Everything that Rises Must Converge. O Connor s upbringing
stemmed from southern roots with a strong religious foundation from which she seems to center her
short stories. Although she is a master at integrating different themes throughout her stories, her dark
comedic style of writing allows her to question one s ability to live a good, proper Christian life,
without inducing hatred or bigotry. O Connor often questions her characters ethics, morals, and how
aware they are spiritually. She brings to light the sinful lives many live by interjecting a condemning
or judgmental attitude. She does however, infer... Show more content on [Link] ...
Mrs. Turpin, a professed saved Christian, is quite judgmental, prejudice, and has an inconsistent
view of Christianity. She is critical of those she vies as below her economic status as less than
she. The revelation she receives comes from Mary Grace, a young girl Mrs. Turpin has heavily
judged. The girl s name is a symbol O Connor uses as a symbol of good as opposed to the bad
ethics Mrs. Turpin displays. The physical eye contact and focus Mary Grace had on Mrs. Turpin
was a symbol of Mary Grace helping Mrs. Turpin reach redemption. Again, as in the other two
short stories, O Connor allows the characters an option of seeking redemption. Mrs. Turpin had the
option of facing her judgmental falsities, by looking Mary Grace in the eye, or not choosing to
r4ealize and change her behavior, by looking away from Mary
Understanding Matrix Structures
Module 5 Critical Thinking: Understanding Matrix Structures An organization s capacity for
responding effectively to dynamic change derives from a synergistic combination of people,
processes, and flexible organizational structures (Gibson, Ivancevich, Donnelly, Konopaske, 2009).
The flexibility of an organization s structure depends on the relationships that determine
organizational workflow, authority and communication (Covin, Slevin, Schultz, 1994). As an
example, this paper describes a matrix structure, offers recommendations for its use, and discusses
the advantages and disadvantages of a matrix relative to the need for organizational flexibility and
responsiveness. The Matrix Structure A matrix structure can be thought of as... Show more content

For example, information needed from various functions for completing a project can be exchanged
more efficiently when horizontal channels are used. A further advantage of horizontal linkages arises
from an increased organizational capability for coping with the high information overload that
accompanies change by enabling the sharing of processing resources (Larson Gobeli, 1987). These
lateral linkages also increase organizational flexibility and responsiveness by enabling the rapid
acquisition and deployment of scarce human and technical resources (Ford Randolph, 1992). For
example, the ability to dispatch specialized technical knowledge on demand for resolution of a
problem anywhere along the project dimension increases overall technical quality and
responsiveness. The very same characteristics that are seen as advantages of a matrix also present
numerous disadvantages, which can potentially diminish the level of organizational flexibility and
responsiveness to change (Ford Randolph, 1992). The duality of a matrix tends to create ambiguity
and conflict in terms of identifying the lines of authority and responsibility for organizational
decision making (Larson Gobeli, 1987). In addition, the confusing ambiguity of a dual reporting
relationship often forces employees to reconcile conflicting responsibilities and priorities, which, in
turn, causes considerable stress, diminished motivation and commitment, and increased resistance to
change (Ford Randolph,
Shrek Cultural Value Essay
What significant cultural value or belief does the film convey? What is important about it?

Shrek conveys the idea of true love and appearances while putting a twist on the classic idea. It
limits the idea of finding a true love at first sight and the damsel must be saved by her true love, a
knight in shining armor. Rather, the damsel in distress is rather not a damsel in distress, but rather a
superb fighter who can handle herself well and does not need the help of a knight in shining armor.
The knight in shining armor happens to be an ogre in dirty armor he takes from the bodies of dead
knights. Throughout Shrek s quest to save Fiona, they are kept apart by the appearance of a
princess and an ogre. Shrek is an ogre who turns out to be the knight in shining armor for Fiona, a
princess who is not a damsel in distress.
The popular concept of a charming prince rescuing a beautiful princess is changed to an ogre
rescuing an ogre. Shrek pushes others away because he is an ogre and believes everybody judges
him as such. He explains to Donkey that ogres are like onions they have layers. He resists falling
in love with Fiona and does not show any affection at the beginning because he thinks there is no
way a princess and an ogre can be together. ... Show more content on [Link] ...
As Shrek crashes through the roof of Fiona s room, Fiona pretends to play the damsel in distress
who is going to be woken up by her true love s kiss. From this, the viewers can tell Fiona is not

true love. However, when Monsieur Hood claims to have rescued her, she doesn t need to be rescued
and proceeds to pummel all of Monsieur Hood s squad, proving herself to be a princess who can
handle herself. Shrek and Donkey are shocked by this because of her appearance of being a
Essay about Gestalt Therapy
Gestalt Therapy

Gestalt therapy was largely developed by Fritz Perls and his wife, Laura. Together they created a
theory that is based on the premise that individuals must be understood in the context of their
ongoing relationship with the environment. To better understand that, one must review the key
concepts, therapeutic process, and the techniques of application. The first key concept of Gestalt
therapy is its view of human nature. Perls believed that genuine knowledge is the product of what is
immediately evident in the experience of the perceiver. He believed that individuals have the
capacity to self regulate in their environment if they are fully aware of what is happening in and
around them. There are several basic ... Show more content on [Link] ...
Contact is made my seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, and moving and it is made effectively by
interacting with nature and other people without one losing their individuality. However, people
often resist contact. Resistances to contact are defenses we develop to prevent us from
experiencing the present. These defenses are called introjection, projection, retroflection, deflection,
and confluence. The concern of Gestalt therapists is helping the client to become aware of how
they are blocking their environment. The last key concept to talk about is energy and blocks to
energy. Blocked energy is another form of resistance and it can be manifested by tension in some
parts of the body such as posture, keeping one s body tight and closed, not breathing deeply, etc The
therapist aims to make their client aware of their blocked energy and bring the sensations to the
client s awareness. To further the understanding of Gestalt therapy, it is important to get a good idea
of the therapeutic process. The basic goal of therapy is attaining awareness and with it, greater
choice. Awareness emerges within the context of a genuine meeting between the client and therapist.
The therapist s function is to assist the client in developing their own awareness and experiencing
themselves how they are in the present. The therapists must also pay attention to their client s body
language. These nonverbal cues can provide a lot of useful information

Reason In The Most Dangerous Game By General Zaroff
Reason or Instinct? Instinct is no match for reason This is true according to general Zaroff, but
does the author of the story agree? Yes, the author of The Most Dangerous Game believes that
reason is no match for instinct. Throughout the story he gives examples of how reason has out
smarted instinct. Reason is the explanation or justification of a certain action or event;the reason is
not affected by force of habit. It is a process of very analytical thinking. Instinct, instinct is action
woven into your mind for long periods of time; it is a second nature for you. For example a
professional basketball player following through after your shot, they do not have to think about
what they are doing they just do it. Instinct is done by a force of habit, you do not think of instinct; it

Jimi Henderson Analysis
David Henderson, an African American poet, wrote the article Jimi Hendrix Deep Within the
Blues and Alive Onstage at Woodstock 25 Years After Death to show how Jimi Hendrix has
continued to influence many people after his untimely death. Additionally, Henderson claims that
no other musician has been able to replicate Hendrix s precise and rapid picking and his
recognizance of sound and noise. Henderson personally knew Hendrix as he previously wrote his
book Scuse Me While I Kiss The Sky to express his opinion on popular black music at the time and
as a promise he made to Hendrix at a nightclub in Manhattan in 1969. It is impossible to deny that
Jimi Hendrixhas not continued to be one of the most influential music artists due to his unique way

also states that to listen to Hendrix today is constantly to be reminded of his gifts. Hendrix is

Portrayal Analysis Of Old Spice
Old spice is a very important brand for men, but not many people would know that Old Spice was
originally made for women. Until little before Christmas time of 1937 Shulton Company sales were
doing well and figured they could do better by transitioning into men products which began the Old
Spice we know today. Over the years the company grew into selling shaving soap, aftershave lotion,
shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, body wash and body sprays leading to high selling products and
manly ads that changed the advertisement game.
Most ads use high movie stars or athletes to grab people s attention for their product. Old Spice is
one of the few who doesn t just depend on their voice but their physical features to grab everyone s
attention. Men like Terry Cruz, Ray Lewis, and Isaiah Mustafa with muscles and a 6 pack to make
the ladies go crazy. Putting them on an ad grabs the female s attention whether they have a man or
not, they want their boyfriend or husband to be like them. Buying that product that Isaiah Mustafa
was in is bond to make their man become somewhat like him especially if Isaiah tells you to become
the man that he is.
In the ad that Isaiah Mustafa is featured in, you can see a white soap bubble made motorcycle in a
bath tub with Isaiah having long bubble hair with a manly mustache, wearing only a vest to show
his abs. There is a pretty looking female looking up to him with awe and wonder clearly attracted to
him by her body tones. Isaiah is holding a red Old
Safe Harbor Business Analysis
AUSTRALIAN COMMERCIAL LAW The provision of Safe Harbor implies to a special rule

implemented by different legal writers and scholars at different span of time, that the provision of
safe harbors is nothing but a scope of reducing the qualm that is formed by setting an indefinite

The introduction of the provision of safe harbor on the directors will be having certain obligations on
its implementation (Taylor, 2012). The Australian Institute of Company Directors stated that it has
been observed where companies went into administration just to avoid the complication of trading

decision making power, which basically obstruct them from choosing trading insolvent (Vadi,

the company or himself but to the future and present aspect of every person who is involved in the
company. Most of the cases notice that the companies are placed in to administration even before it
is required due to the structure of the current law (Wardrop, 2011). The Australian Institute of the
Company s Director further laid down that in its opinion, the application of the provision of the safe
