I aspire to study Medicine, (Dental Surgery and Pharmacy as my other options) at the Hong

Kong University.
What sparked my decision to study medicine is my absolute interest in the complexity of the
human body, especially the study of physiology and human anatomy. I want to offer direct
help to people, especially cancer patients because both my grandfathers passed away due
to colon cancer and lung cancer respectively. Since then, I am motivated to make a positive
impact on patients in their times of need as a doctor. I also aspire to become a surgical
oncologist so that I can be involved in surgical processes like removing tumors through
laparoscopy.
I had a one-week shadowing experience with an interventional radiologist in a local hospital
in Malaysia. I observed the way he consults his patients and approaches them with
empathy and humility, which touches my heart to be a humble doctor like him in the future.
He said to me, “Treat patients like how you treat your brother or sister. Do what’s best for
them.”
When I was in college and high school, I actively participated in sports such as badminton,
table tennis and volleyball. Through sports, I learned that players have to work together as a
team in order to win a game. No matter what role one is playing, each of our efforts
contribute to the team’s success. Similarly, doctors work together in multidisciplinary
settings when it comes to diagnoses and medical treatment.
I have volunteered in an 8-month tutoring experience, with 5 months dedicated to my peers
in college and 3 months to underprivileged students. Through the mentoring journey, I have
improved my soft skills such as communication and time-management as I have to find a
balance between my own study time as well as making myself available for my tutees.
I am extremely interested in the Enrichment Year that HKU offers as part of the MBBS
programme that other universities do not. Through the Enrichment Year in Year 3, I would
like to do a research attachment with partner universities of HKU, specifically on cancer. I
want to delve deeper into the study and come up with life-changing discoveries if possible.
Medicine is a lifelong career and I am ready to commit my entire life into the medical field: to
do as much as I can for patients.
