The world of healthcare we live in today is ever-changing and growing by the
1
day. New discoveries and life-changing treatments are discovered all the time.
Nurses like me have to be able to adapt and change. We have to be able to learn
new skills, grow our knowledge base, and transfer that knowledge and skills
into real-life patient care. Developing a professional identity while on this
nursing journey has strengthened my confidence and helped me to have a
secure foundation in who I am as a healthcare provider. Professional Identity
develops over time and with experiences Travel down this journey with me as I
discuss why I chose to become a nurse, my nursing philosophy, how my
philosophy has developed over the years, and where I stand in the process of
transitioning into an advanced practice baccalaureate nurse.
As a child, my mother owned an in-home daycare center. Her love for children
inspired me. The way she loved other’s children as her own and how she lived to
take care of others was what most impressed me. The biggest example of my
mother’s love was the day she and my father chose to adopt my sister and me.
This selfless act of kindness made me watch her caring personality and follow
her example even more. Her desire to care and provide for innocent children in
their time of need made me realize I wanted to love as she loved. Her
impression of me as a young girl moved me to want to be a baby nurse. With my
mother’s inspiration and a little help from “A Baby Story” on TLC, I knew my
whole life that nursing was what I wanted to do.

My nursing philosophy is essential in how I direct the care I provide to my
2
patients. When I think about what my personal philosophy is, I feel that it has
grown and adapted as my years of experience have progressed. I realize my
core values lay the foundation of how my philosophy is directed but on-the-job
3
experience bends and shapes it throughout the years. My personal philosophy
is built on my core values of integrity, honesty, and compassion. These values
direct my view on how holistic and empathetic nursing care should be provided.
I believe that providing holistic care is essential to steer patients toward a
process of healing. I also feel that with every different specialty I have worked
in, I have run into different types of situations that have adjusted my viewpoint
on critical issues.
My philosophy is like a kaleidoscope; with every turn, no matter how big or
small, the image changes but remains beautiful. Caring and advocating for
patients is a beautiful job. That job has caused me to do some self-reflection at
times. Being able to recognize my strengths and weaknesses has caused me to
grow in my professional career into a leadership role as a nursing supervisor. I
have learned that my professional strengths are clinical competence and
communication. Because I have had a broad spectrum of experience, it has
allowed me to advocate and lead my team. That experience causes my team to
respect me as a leader and when issues arise within the team, my
communication skills help resolve them. Areas I need to improve on are
emotional intelligence. I feel this is an area that leadership is something we
have to groom and perfect over time and it looks different for each team
member.
As I transition into being a professional nursing student, I find myself in the
neutral phase of the Bridges Model of Transition. This phase is where the

critical psychological realignments and repatterning begin. ("Bridges transition
model," 2020) I have accepted the fact that I am now a student but relearning
the responsibilities of being a student again has yet to become a habit for me.
This part of the transition should be a minor adjustment for me as I begin to
work on my time management skills. I often find myself getting caught up in my
life and procrastinating on my assignments. I hope that I can improve on this.
The Bridges Model of Transition has helped me to figure out what phase I am in
and where I need to be. It will continue to help guide and direct me with the
necessary tools to be successful throughout this class. Not only will it help me
to be successful not only in this class but in this program and the rest of my
nursing career. The final stage of The Bridges Model of Transition is called new
beginnings. New beginnings start once I have completely come to terms with
where I am in this journey and continue to move forward with the new behaviors
and knowledge I will learn. “The challenge in this phase is to keep moving
forward.” () Constantly moving forward and building on newly learned skill sets
is how I can and will continue to be successful in my career.
