Consists of: mainly of 3 standard parts (prefix, root, suffix)
Prefixes
appears at the beginning of the medical term, indicating location, direction, quality, quantity, color or type

Roots
It is the foundational element of any term & gives the term its essential meaning Each term contains at least one root
The term begins with root when the prefix is absent It indicates a body part or system
Sometimes the medical term may contain more than one root, which is called compound word
Ex: gastro-enter-ology that means study of stomach and intestine
