Contingency Plan for ECDIS Failure

Purpose:

To ensure the safety of navigation in case of total or partial failure of the ECDIS.

1. Nature of Failure

- Total ECDIS Blackout / Screen Freeze

- GPS / Position Input Missing

- AIS / Radar Overlay Not Displaying

- Alarm / Route Monitoring Failure

2. Immediate Actions

- Inform the Officer of the Watch (OOW).

- Inform the Master immediately.

- Determine the extent and cause of failure.

- Attempt to restart the ECDIS unit(s).

- Switch to Backup ECDIS unit if available.

- Switch to paper charts if dual ECDIS is not available.

3. Alternative Navigation Procedures

- Use paper nautical charts (latest edition & corrected).

- Plot ship's position manually using:

- Visual bearings

- Radar range and bearings

- Manual dead reckoning (DR)

- GPS position from standalone receiver

- Use parallel indexing and echo sounder for safe passage.

4. Recording & Reporting

- Record the time, position, and nature of ECDIS failure in:

- Bridge Logbook

- GMDSS Logbook (if related to navtex/chart corrections)

- Report to:

- Company DPA / Tech Department

- Coastal Authorities / VTS (if deviation required)

- If serious defect, submit Defect Report to Class / Flag.

5. Rectification

- Check power supply and all signal input connections.

- Restart or reboot ECDIS system.

- Run self-diagnostics or call onboard technician.

- Contact equipment supplier or shore-based technical support if needed.

- Do not resume normal ECDIS navigation until the system is verified operational.

6. Resuming Normal Operation

- Once the ECDIS is restored and confirmed fully functional:

- Compare ECDIS position with radar & visual fixes.

- Resume ECDIS-based navigation under Master's approval.

- Continue to monitor system performance closely.

This contingency plan should be reviewed regularly and included in bridge team training drills.
