The United Nations (UN) is an international organization founded in 1945 after the Second World
War. It was created to maintain peace and security in the world.
Origin and History
After the failure of the League of Nations, the UN was formed to prevent future wars. Leaders met in
San Francisco in 1945 and signed the UN Charter.
Objectives and Principles
The UN aims to maintain international peace, develop friendly relations, achieve international
cooperation, and promote human rights.
Main Organs
The main organs of the UN are the General Assembly, Security Council, International Court of
Justice, Economic and Social Council, Trusteeship Council, and the Secretariat.
General Assembly
It is the main deliberative organ where all member nations meet and discuss international issues.
Security Council
Responsible for maintaining international peace and security. It has 5 permanent members with veto
power.
International Court of Justice
It settles legal disputes between countries and gives advisory opinions.
Economic and Social Council
Coordinates economic, social, and related work of UN specialized agencies.
Trusteeship Council
It was established to supervise trust territories. It has suspended its operations since 1994.
Secretariat
It carries out the day-to-day work of the UN under the leadership of the Secretary-General.
Specialized Agencies
The UN has many specialized agencies like UNICEF, UNESCO, WHO, ILO, FAO, etc.
UNICEF
Works for childrens rights, survival, development, and protection worldwide.
UNESCO
Promotes education, science, culture, and communication.
WHO
World Health Organization works for global health and combating diseases.
ILO
International Labour Organization deals with labour issues.
