IMPLEMENTATION OF THE LEADERSHAPE IMMERSION PROJECT
S. Y. 2022-2023
Project Title: Project RePAIRS (Reinforced and Programmed Activities to Improve Reading Skills)
I. INTRODUCTION
Mahagna Elementary School is geographically located southern
portion of the Municipality of Abuyog with a population of not more than 300
families. The Primary source of income is farm labor. Although its prime
source of income is farming, most settlers of the barangay are only farm
care takers or “saop”. They take care the farm of their landlords.
The school is a pure multigrade of Abuyog South District. The school ‘s
enrolment is fluctuating because of uncontrolled migration of families to and
from other Barangays or municipalities. However, it has maintained its 0%
drop-out rate for the past 5 years.
The result of the literacy test conducted on April 2023, 5 out of 80
learners are considered frustration readers. 5 of these learners are in Grade
3. It was found out that the identified learners were not able to perform the
required skills in reading because the teacher used the one-size fits all
strategy in teaching reading thus depriving the learners in learning the
specific skill necessary for them to comprehend which is the greatest factor
in their performance in reading being frustration readers.
According to Kolb, learners learn differently, some learns faster that the
other. This means that varied teaching strategies must be used by the
teacher so that all learners can learn the concepts they are teaching.
With this result, the school aims to improve the literacy performance level
of the identified learners from frustration readers to Independent readers
hopefully by introducing the Project RePAIRS. This project will use
programmed instruction in literacy skills to the identified learners.
Programmed instruction is a self-learning method. It was structured to
allow learners to proceed at their own pace, mastering the body of
knowledge in small steps, according to Skinner.
The project was implemented daily after class hours from May 18 to June
16, 2023. The teacher extended 30 minutes of their time to conduct the
immersion project. The parents of the identified frustration-reader learners
were informed before the conduct of the project. It was monitored by the
school head twice a week to assess its progress. An awarding ceremony was
done to give recognition on the progress that the learners made.
